In one of Christophe Gilbert’s photo-surrealist pieces, three nude babies with heart-shaped butts, are lying in a row, backs to the sun, waiting for their turn to suckle their mother’s breast. Their mother is more victim than muse. Her anatomically flawless body is flailed across the ground, in a way that looks like it had been beaten up and thrown down after a hard day’s night of sadomasochism. She is asleep, but not peacefully. Most likely, when her loving triplets had woken her up in the middle of the night to be breast-fed, she was in such a hideous state that she simply rolled over to them and whispered, ‘Just have your way with me’. I’ve had a not so secret crush on A Spoonful of Mint ever since I first saw her work. She’s based in Stockholm and makes the most perfect looking geometric wood jewellery and paints it by hand in contrasting black and pastel colours. Read more
I recently stumbled across the beautiful work of Isreali artist Tal R in all it’s raw and colourful splendor. Rough, spontaneous texture, tapestry-like compositions, and artfully placed drips all come together within Tal’s folksy oeuvre. I can’t even really decide which I’m swooning over more — the Grosz-like paintings or his fantastically raw drawings. Read more
The philosophy of a beginning is to me, a wonderful concept. I really enjoy flicking through the back catalogues of a musician and discovering their origin, then tracing their musical journey to the present. So for American-born, Paris-based sister duo CocoRosie, who released their third album The Adventure of Ghosthouse and Stillborn to much acclaim, making the trip to their beginnings is more than worth the journey: their debut album, Le Maison de Mon Reve (released back in 2004) was a gentle stroll through their pop and classical influences, which melt together seamlessly into a backdrop for their unique and enchanting voices.
The Loveless Cafe, a little oasis on the outskirts of Nashville, is like a refuge for the disenfranchised, serving up good ol’ southern cooking to a legion of America’s finest. Read more

Setting Sun’s cover of Tom Petty’s You Got Lucky was recently released as part of Buffet Libre DJ’s compilation CD, Rewind 2. Says frontman, Gary Levitt, of their version on the song: ‘We got back from our European tour on Christmas Eve with a December 27th deadline for the track looming. It was finally started on December 26th and then sent off completed the next day. It was a great exercise in having to let some things go. That’s twenty-four hours out the door complete, old school style. That’s how records used to be made.
