Aya Brackett was chosen as one of PDN’s Top 30 Photographers To Watch in 2008. Her love of food and design informs her photography and fuels a constant search for the unusual and inspiring. We asked her about the syling for her shoots: ‘I am attracted to natural and sometimes quirky compositions — something which seems real and like a frame or moment caught within a moving scene. The challenge I always face is how to create a better composition without it appearing contrived. I’m attracted to natural imperfections and mess, but I’m always trying to simplify the scene to eliminate distracting elements’. Read more
Having transformed the way we look at sand, Gary Greenberg has now made us rethink our perception of sugar. That’s right: these stunning photos are actually micro-photography shots of ‘sugar crystallizing out of a solution of sugar water’. Remarkable. Read more
With just a limited, two-toned palette of acrylics, A. Andrew Gonzalez renders incredibly detailed images, mainly of goddesses and sirens, that look as if they’ve been carved in relief out of marble. Read more
Films involving characters faced with an impossible choice never make easy viewing, an example being the Nick Cave Australian gem, The Proposition. A nightclub manager, played with understated power by Joaquin Phoenix, is the victim here, and you actually feel truly uncomfortable as his predicament unfolds. Set in the 1980s, We Own The Night shows a real nostalgia for that period — particularly in the costumes. Read more
Itdrewitself had the honor of visiting with the legendary Ron English — an occasional Lost At E Minor contributor — at his home in Poughkeepsie, New York, last month, and had an amazing time rummaging through his studio, photographing endless amounts of paintings and sculptures.
