The frontman for Sydney trailblazers, Paper Scissors, has just dropped his first solo EP under the alias of Pork Pies, and it’s an absolute beaut. Like the Paper Scissors’ more low-key numbers, there’s a real feeling of raw nostalgia running through the record. Jai Pyne’s distinctive vocals linger on your eardrums for a while after they’ve ceased, anchored down by a poignancy and sense of longing.

Two of our favourite Aussie bands — bluejuice [above] and The Paper Scissors — will be embarking on an extensive tour of the country in April and May, taking in everywhere from Fremantle to Hobart and a host of cities in between. The bluejuice track Vitriol — a bouncy mesh of Hip Hop and blue collar soul — was the second most played song on Triple J radio in 2007, while The Paper Scissors are the buzz band for the year. New York-based photographer Alison Malone ventured behind the typically closed walls of the secret society known as Job’s Daughters to capture portraits of girls who are the direct blood relatives of Master Masons. When you first hear William Elliot Whitmore’s voice, it’s hard to believe he isn’t a grizzled old man. The baritone-voiced one-man-band does rousing bar room ballads on the banjo and guitar that are sure to send shivers down your spine. On closer listen, Whitmore’s voice does seem slightly affected. But like Tom Waits before him, his voice is likely to age like a good scotch.
