We love paper, we love books, we love folding stuff and Vermont-based Etsy seller Luciana Frigerio, who folds pages in paper books so they open to reveal words or symbols, makes simply splendid stuff. We have a soft spot for the book universe: that’s the one with the infinity loop carved on it.

Imagine American history from 1935 to 1985 all played out at once with shadow puppets. We’re pretty much talking cultural icon heaven here.”Leaves of Grass” is an amazing collection of snippets from the past. The enormous series made Canadian artist Geoffrey Farmer consists entirely of clippings and photographs from the American Life magazine. Each image is mounted on a little post as if it were a functional puppet. The display represents five very full decades of diverse culture.

Irving Harper is an industrial designer who is best known for his logo design for Herman Miller as well as his Marshmallow Sofa and sunburst clocks. Harper was the director of design at George Nelson Associates during the 1960s, and now Skira Rizzoli has just released a book detailing a relatively unknown aspect of Harper’s life: his paper art. The new book entitled Irving Harper: Works in Paper showcases Harper’s whimsical and structural paper art. Drawing influence from subjects such as Picasso, Egyptian hieroglyphics, and his New York home, Irving Harper’s works in paper are a beautiful and imaginative sight to see.

Miso is a Melbourne based artist whose beautifully crafted pieces have an intricate balance of vulnerability with the tactile nature of a Flake chocolate bar. For her series New York Moon, she looks into the futurepast, and maps the New York city grid over the valleys and craters of that great big ball in the sky. Peter Gentenaar, who was originally a printmaker, only started dabbling with papermaking when the commercial paper he used wasn’t good enough for his engraved works. It’s taken his work in a whole new direction as he is now known for his massive paper sculptures. These take on a life-like quality during the pulp drying and shrinking process as he makes the paper from scratch.

This clever design series presented during Dutch Design Week 2008 combines beautiful fonts and taxidermy birds. Surprisingly, these images brighten your mood with all the vibrant color. Somehow a stuffed dead body isn’t so creepy after all. The concept is playing off the fact that the words spell out noises that the birds made while still living, but the birds being photographed are actually dead. Each cool set of letters is cut out of bright paper which contrast nicely with the colors in the photos.

There’s something really dark about what Mexican artist Carlos Amorales does with Black Cloud, an installation with 30,000 handcrafted black paper moths that just sit around on walls, and you know, overwhelm gallery visitors by their sheer combined presence. We can’t think of a better way to beat mottephobia except by watching Mothra and hanging out with their paper dummies.

Paper artist and photographer Bronia Sawyer’s latest work is titled Live Breath Art. A collection in progress, it features body parts – lungs, pelvis, and spine, so far – that she has sculpted from rolled pages of old books, inked, lit with colored torches, photographed, and manipulated to create an homage to positive health.

Origami is the ancient Japanese art of folding thin paper into animals, flowers or whatever object your skills allow. Obviously the artist Marc Fichou shares the love to Origami and celebrated it with his own series of animals. The fascination lies in the reversible process of folding and unfolding, but still retaining the physical marks, he says.

Benja Harney is a self-taught paper engineer based in Sydney, and he creates beautiful and complex works of art from a very delicate medium. Harney has been engineering high-quality pop-up books and paper constructions for the past six years, and his work is now on display in the Queen Victoria Building. Large, vibrant sculptures of lush foliage, blossoms, butterflies, dragon flies, and bees are suspended from the central dome of the building. This is Harney’s largest and most ambitious installation, and it is on display until the end of September.

Elly Mackay is one of my favorite artists. She lives and works in Owen Sound in Ontario, Canada. She creates breathtakingly beautiful, fanciful, storybook-like Yupo paper works on a small scale. Then, in a small stage setting, or ‘theater’, she photographs the drawings to create the finished product. The end result is akin to a picture out of the most beautiful, timeless storybook imaginable. She is currently working on children’s books.

UK-based designer Jonathan Shackleton designed a campaign for Fedrigoni, an Italian paper company, by making templates for potential clients to create their own paper tuxedos. Shackleton’s book contains different paper samples so clients can mix and match colors and patters to see what paper best “suits” their needs. Shackleton’s design offers a creative, fun, and hands-on experience for Fedrigoni’s advertising campaign.

I stumbled upon these intricate, gorgeous, delicate paper sculptures by accident. They are part of a collection called Tokyo From Memory and were created by Australian artist Miso (aka Ukrainian-born Stanislava Pinchuk). They are currently on show the Hugo Michell Gallery in Melbourne.

Some people paint, others do origami. What Simon Schubert does, might best be called ‘something right between the two’. The German artist folds and unfolds paper until a ‘ghost image’ appears. His recent work includes a collection of more than 100 pictures resembling different views on the interior of a villa. I have no clue how someone can think of an idea like that, but it is surely marvelous.

I recently came across Helen Musselwhite’s beautiful paper sculptures. Inspired by nature, her stunningly intricate layered designs draw you into a fairytale world of forests, flowers and hedgerows. Her framed pieces make beautiful wall art, but it’s her haunting sculptures in glass domes that really stick in my mind.
