Kim Cogan is a dude. See, in Asia, surnames come first. Kim was born in Korea. Therefore, Kim is his family name. Kim makes panoramic paintings of city skylines. We sure do love skylines. They remind us of the vast protective shell of civilization that surrounds us, sheltering us from dirty dirty nature.

Kim also paints lots of paintings about interiors, urban spaces, and buildings — places where humans do what humans do away from the bothersome trees and birds and grass. There is a warm sentimentality to his images, expressed via his washy brushstrokes and moody lighting, because what’s not to be sentimental about in our concrete habitat?
