According to his biography, Orouni is the name of a parasitic plant that lives in damp woods, dependent on a host tree for its nourishment. Quite what the artist behind the name is feeding on at the moment is open to question. A listen to his album, A Matter of Scale, triggers memories of early Velvet Underground brought back down to earth a bit: that drifting, almost dreamlike, narrative, this time influenced by pure nature rather than the manufactured products of it. These Minova ceramic knives with gorgeous images printed onto the blades are freaking badass, but I want them to make one with skulls and dragons and stuff. That’s the one I would tell some rich person to buy for me.
Opening up a pack of Mast Brothers chocolate is like unwrapping a gift from a long lost Auntie. The paper is like antique wallpaper, the chocolate like sweet nothings. Only it’s something. And that something is damn, damn tasty.

Austin band The Low Lows are one of my most prized finds of the year so far. It’s introspective music — staggered harmonies delivered by a distant, agonised voice that filters through a wall of tranquil guitar distortion and measured drumming. Every instrument carries a powerful emotion, sometimes keeping their distance from one another, floating up and around the airwaves, and other times colliding and crashing back to earth.

Baltimore Mural by Josh Van Horne
My friend Josh Van Horne, a local Baltimore artist, did this amazing mural in our neighborhood that depicts the history of this warehouse-laden area.

Pencils made from recycled newspaper
The problem with awesome things like these pencils made out of recycled newspaper is that you almost don’t want to use them.
Sometime in 2010, the folks behind Dirty Dishes had the slightly silly idea of using cheeky vintage photos and putting them on dinner plates. After doing lots of research, talking to lots of people, and receiving loads of positive feedback, they wondered if this idea was so silly after all. And thus Dirty Dishes was born. Read more
