The oddest thing has happened: the Internet has made radio famous again. Ten years ago, who would have guessed that radio, a distinctly analogue technology, would be revived by a distinctly digital technology, in the form of something called a ‘podcast’? My current favourite on the airwaves is Radio Valerie, an online broadcaster devoted to odd and obscure music. They’re based in Melbourne, but they’ve bypassed the old school FM system in favour of live streaming, so anybody, anywhere, can listen. It can be challenging listening, but hang in there and you’ll discover something great. It’s amazing what a bunch of forward-thinking young go-getters can do when they forget about conventions and rules.
