Damn is this funny. Not only funny, but beautifully illustrated and sometimes educational. The Oatmeal has been around for a while and has been publishing a stack of new comics lately. My favourite is ’15 things worth knowing about coffee’. I’d been wondering where the term ‘Americano’ comes from, and due to an amusing illustration and an educational note I now know during WWII American soldiers ordered water with their espresso to dilute the strong flavour. Isn’t that something? To have a laugh and learn a few things, check out The Oatmeal. Read more

Best for reading in the warm glow of an existential crisis, Dorothy Gambell’s Cat and Girl is a brilliant online comic series. It’s my daily fix of clever puns, political satire, pop culture references and biting wit, lovingly rendered in cute black and white drawings. Cat and Girl are housemates and best friends, and like all best friends, they can talk about anything: from literature, to the economy, to the perils of playing ping pong with a rotten egg. Sure, there are arguments, but most are resolved by Cat’s unwavering sense of surreal humour that balances out Girl’s eternal pessimism. ‘How do you stay warm in the cold shadow of death?’, she asks him, pleadingly. ‘Fireworks’, he replies. Gambell will also draw a personalised comic for you if you make a donation to her site via Paypal. Mine is framed and on my wall at home. Read more

Frank Stockton finally has some great prints for sale through Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra. These are reproductions of some pretty racy images he did for Penthouse awhile back. Who says the guys are just reading those mags for the photos?

This cool work is from the witty German artist, Ich bin Kong. All of his work is fun and original, but this one particularly won me over. Read more

Oh, ok, so now I’ve seen it all. Or perhaps, in this case, I’m not seeing enough. Japanese game shows are so much fun. Seriously.

Almanac Market in Philadelphia is slightly pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for. Offering fantastic bread, cheeses, produce, and cured meats such as sopressata and pepperoni, it was a great pit stop when my band played in town, and definitely more economical and tasty than hitting a greasy spoon for road snacks.

Whenever I begin to take life too seriously, I head over to Indexed for a little humor treat. Never have math, formulas and graphs been so clever and witty. The creator of the site started it as a way to make fun of some things, sense of others. Somehow her little formula worked. She is now listed in TIME Magazine’s Top Blogs of 2008. And now Jessica Hagy is a published author. Enjoy exploring the inner-workings of her mind. It is simply delightful.

The Futurebirds are an unruly band of boys from Athens, Georgia, but they might as well have been reared in the backwoods of Woodstock by Levon Helm himself. Their debut release, Hampton’s Lullaby, is out on July 13 via Autumn Tone Records.

Who says telling the time should be an easy task? Pleasing to the eye, not so much on the brain, Nooka watches are arguably more concerned about aesthetics than it is about function. Created by artist and designer, Matthew Waldman, its bar graph-like function lets wearers see, rather intuitively and visually, that time has passed by. We love it, but good luck trying to work out exactly how much time has gone by.

Italian brand Brionvega has resurrected the classy Radiofonografio piece first created in 1965. The updated version is just like the original turntable/radio unit, but also has a CD/DVD player.
