		<p>It wasn’t that long ago that we sniffed out this 1938 picture of a <a href="http://www.lostateminor.com/2012/10/24/this-water-lily-can-lift-heavier-weights-than-you/" target="_blank">massive water lily</a> lifting a dainty little kitten, so it’s funny to see the bar has raised with an even earlier photo dated 1892 showing even more of these <a href="http://natgeofound.tumblr.com/post/48282472277/victoria-amazonica-water-lilies-can-reach-20-feet" target="_blank">giant water lilies lifting an entire family of kids</a> in North Carolina — including a dog on a chair. </p>
<p>Says the note that came with it: ‘Perching children atop the massive leaves was all the rage in water gardens of the time’. Now, where can we find these water lilies in the world today?</p>

		<p>We usually think of the Great Depression and World War II in black and white, so this collection of colour snaps by the <a href="http://www.loc.gov/pictures/collection/fsac/" target="_blank">Library of Congress</a> really warrants a good flip-through. Lush and sparse at the same time, these <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/sets/72157603671370361/" target="_blank">slices of everyday life</a> originally came in the form of colour transparencies ranging in size from 35 mm to 4” x 5”. They were captured by photographers working for the US government’s Farm Security Administration and Office of War Information departments. <span id="more-121920"></span></p>
