Living in the home country of IKEA, it is always nice to see something original, hand crafted, and AWESOME. Adam Wallacavage’s chandeliers are just that. Creating the chandelier from epoxy clay, spray paint and ‘secret sauce to give it that classy glassy look,’ Wallacavage creates extravagant ornamental sculptures crafted in a myriad of colours and designs that are often inspired by octopus (ironically, though he has an obsession with the ocean, he is allergic to seafood). He started by designing for his own Philadelphia home, which looks like its from the pages of a Jules Verne novel.

Yeah, yeah, we’re huge fans of octopi. We’re also huge fans of robots. Which makes the octopus robot just that much more magical. This isn’t just any robo-octo either, it’s the world’s first entirely soft robot too. Primarily developed for search and rescue missions at sea, the robot moves with six silicone tentacles and uses two specialized tentacles — tricked out with artificial muscles, motors and sensors — to detect objects and grasp them. We’ve seen the videos and the tentacles look uncannily like they belong to a real octopus, thanks to its skin made out of knitted nylon textile coated with waterproof silicone rubber. The first prototype of the beast is currently displayed in London at the Science Museum.

We love octopi. They’re masters of disguise and have three hearts and nine brains because they’re so badass. We’d love to have an octopus as a pet too if they weren’t so good at escaping either. Such is life. Here’s the next best thing: a surrogate octopus companion in the form of a 130cm-long octopus bolster. It will — as these hilarious product shots show — wrap its eight long tentacles around you everywhere you go whether you’re sleeping, reading or driving. The Chinese are the ones behind this, of course.

If there is such a thing as a collective unconscious world, then the octopus is spooking around in there for quite a while now. The amount of weird squid photos and drawings I have seen in the past twelve months surely is amazing.

As an example to underline my theory, I have collected for you this fine specimen of octopus weirdness that recently popped up in one of my social media dashboards. Where it comes from exactly, and who has drawn it, I don’t know. And I am not sure I want to know. One thing’s for sure: the artist either has an amazing humour or he needs help. Or maybe both!
