So you make music and you work to create something that’s different, something distinctly yours, maybe you find it. You’re elated. You try not to think that maybe you’re the best musician you know, maybe in the whole town right now, walking around, you, the best musician ever. Everything is sounding like what God would whistle.

So, you take a break one day from being a genius and you put on a mix CD while you’re making coffee and it slowly starts to hit you that this mix-tape you casually put on is full of music that you thought you alone were making, only they’ve done it better and they did it thirty years ago in a foreign country. Domo arigato.
