Japanese photographer Shinichi Maruyama’s abstract photo series, “Nudes“, might look like it was created with long-exposure photography, but in reality, each flesh-colored swirl is a composite of ten thousand individual photographs. The subjects of each composite are nude dancers in motion, and the results look almost sculpture-like.

Of this series, he says: ‘With Bypassing the Rational, I am knowingly retreating from the details which draw and entice us, and which allow us to judge. Seeing every pore, every scar and sag is not a route to intimacy; it is a pretence. Instead, the focus only reaches part of the figure. The rest is a blur in a vibrant, limitless sea of color, a confluence of emotions and feelings; this evokes the traces of memory we have for each other. His paintings are beautifully conceptualised, rich in narrative and technically impressive. Of his work, he says: ‘I see each human figure as a unique challenge. I am coaxed to find the unique relationship between the shapes and tones that give the particular subject its subtle appeal and unrepeatable vitality. My paintings are not photographic representations of my subjects, but rather are my elaboration of what I find to be of value in them’.
