Since 2008, English musician and producer Theo Keating has been making music under the moniker Fake Blood. Trashing the rule book and shying away from all forms of publicity, including interviews and recognition of his actual name, Keating has become something of an enigma – wanting fans to enjoy his music without any preconceptions. Keating has dropped an EP entitled YES/NO. The three track release features haunting piano melodies, blazing synth lines and bottomless bass lines; sounding something like an apocalyptic soundtrack.

Owen Gatley, an illustrator based in Berlin, has made some wonderful maps of London, Paris and New York. Using symbols to show where major landmarks such as London’s Big Ben and New York’s Statue of Liberty are, Gatley has created a unique view of the famous cities. The maps were featured in the Luck issue of Ideas Illustrated. We wonder if anyone’s used them to get around the cities?

Goldsmith are yet another one of the exciting bands that are coming out of the Newcastle, Australia, music scene. We sat down with them to talk relatives, basements, and Dire Straits.

LAEM: Goldsmith is said to be Donnie Goldsmith and friends. Who are your friends?
G: Donnie’s friends are a mixture of blood relatives and childhood friends. By name they are Jackie, Keith, Alan and Dennis – which may or may not be their real names. Either way, we are 5 close human beings who are fairly well in sync with each other when it comes to writing and performing music.

LAEM: I hear you record in your basement. What does that bring to your music?
G: Recording in our basement brings a lot of traction to the writing process. It only takes plugging a few mics into a different interface and we can quickly record what we’ve written and – write from what we’ve recorded. We’ve found that this way the song is served much better. Rather than everyone jostling for a part to play we listen to the whole song a lot more and write and contribute from there.

LAEM: When can we expect an LP or new material?
G: We’re planning a series of single releases at present before we look at an LP. At the moment we have a number of songs recorded. We’re just deciding what to release next. We want our singles to represent a clear progression of work that are complete by themselves but still belong together.

LAEM: Five songs our readers should check out?
G: Five songs that you should check out – and that have inspired us as writers in one form or another – are:
“Say My Name” – Holy Ghost
“Round and Round” – Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti
“Games People Play” – The Alan Parson’s Project
“Song for America” – Destroyer
“Sultans of Swing” – Dire Straits

If you’re yet to hear about Brisbane five piece Art of Sleeping, it’s time to check them out. Dazzling critics at BIGSOUND, the folk driven rockers have dropped their second single for 2012, Above the Water. Art of Sleeping are set to release an EP in October and join The Paper Kites on a national tour of Australia. Above the Water brings together poetic lyrics, tight drums, precise guitar work, and a compelling voice; effortlessly moving from bottomless lows to soaring, euphoric highs.

Bears With Guns are a five piece from the country NSW town of Parkes – famously known for its Radio Telescope affectionately known as ‘The Dish’. Being picked up by Highway 125 (INXS, Midnight Oil, The Divinyls), the band are currently in the midst of their first national tour, celebrating the release of their EP Taken for a Fool, a five track release full of beautiful folk rock inspired by bands like Mumford and Sons and the John Butler Trio. Thumping congas, electric licks, and touches of the old west make for a solid, dark edged, debut release.

After being a part of Newcastle four piece The Karma Cops, Jess Moxey and Stef Threadgate finally realised their dream of being a two piece and formed Hey Lady! After only months on the scene, the two rocking ladies have self-released a four track EP. Being only vocals, guitar, and drums it would be expected that the sound wouldn’t be that big but the girls have defied the odds. Incorporating layered vocals, glockenspiel samples, and a pretty unique guitar style, the EP has a really prominent low end.

New York has been pumping out some really interesting bands and artists of late: Vampire Weekend, Sleigh Bells and Azealia Banks, to name a few. So of course a new four piece from Brooklyn called People Get Ready has caught our attention. They are a combination of talents: founding member Steven Reker has toured as a dancer and guitarist with David Byrne, while Luke Fasano is a former member of the indie pop band Yeasayer. Ahead of the release of their debut album, People Get Ready has released the first single, Windy Cindy. Sighting inspiration from Cindy Sherman’s Untitled Film Stills, the track is a reflection on romanticism and liveable art incorporating swelling guitar, jumping drums and one sunny voice. We can’t wait for the album.
