The Burnside bar is a block from my apartment in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It’s pretty much our regular hang out before practice. Everyone who works there is really awesome. They have amazing cocktails and a great selection of beers. One of the best things about the place, though, is the food. The Juicy Lucy burger is almost a daily meal for me. They also have fried cheese curds.

Some people just aren’t satisfied with regular street maps and London-based designer/illustrator Jenni Sparks is one of them. Sparks has created an illustrated map of New York City that is amazingly detailed: labelled landmarks, coloured subway lines, and a little bit of humour for good measure. We think this would look great in any Manhattan loft. Good thing you can buy yourself a copy.

Most people think of New York as that busy, chaotic city that never sleeps. Firstly, people do sleep. And, secondly, all of New York isn’t busy. It’s sometimes a quiet, beautiful city that most people don’t take the time to really explore. I wonder whether it takes a 15 year-old to truly appreciate and discover the beauty of the city. Only in New York? We think so, though those in Tokyo may disagree. According to that reputable news source, the UK’s Daily Mail, a ‘developer of a luxury condo building in New York City’s Greenwich Village has listed a parking spot for $1 million’. That’s right. And the spot only holds one car, measuring in at an underwhelming 12 feet by 23 feet. So is it even semi-reasonable to ask this much? The New York Post thinks not. They’ve determined that ‘driver would have to rack up a $115 illegal parking ticket every day for 24 years before reaching the cost of this luxury garage’. Ah, the joys of deep pockets.

No New York is a remarkable short film by filmmaker, artist and New York-native Rick Liss. Employing stop-motion film techniques set to the frenetic music of Laurie Anderson, Liss propels us through the city as it existed in 1983. For those of us who weren’t around back then, the city presented here feels both foreign and familiar: the streets are seedier, and there’s a sense of lawless possibility that makes present-day New York feel sanitized by comparison. But the pulsating energy of the city is instantly recognizable to anyone who’s ever spent time in the Big Apple.

Cynthia von Buhler’s Speakeasy Dollhouse is a biographical tale of murder, mafia, and intrigue in New York City told with handmade dolls and sets, in conjunction with an immersive play. It was initially set for a two-night run, limited only to it’s Kickstarter supporters. However, due to overwhelming interest, von Buhler added a Halloween show, and plans to add more dates and locations in the new year.

The Depthcore Collective has released it’s latest themed exhibition entitled OBSOLETE. Our members used the chapter as a platform to examine the chronological relevancy of topics ranging from the environment to humanity to technology, and made artwork across a timeline encompassing past, future and present to show the effects of decay and progress of the relationship between these prime entities.

Featuring more than 70 artworks from 50 international artists, its release coincides with our first major presentation at OFFF 2011, as well as our first live exhibition in New York City. Depthcore itself has undergone a major overhaul, with a new focus on inter-chapter content, including interviews, workshops, resources and more.

This is a really strong shoe, and lasts a long, long time. My dad says that you should replace your shoes every eight months, but I haven’t replaced these in a year and a half. I like running at night. It’s the only time New York City feels empty. There’s only Chinese men fishing in the East River and a few couples making out.

Street Kids is a portraiture series by photographer Adam Taylor that captures the gruelling hardships young people face while living on the streets. His initial shooting in New York City was so successful that he headed to Sydney to discover the same problem: a generation of youth missing a sense of belonging because they are the fall-outs of social and economic change. Where else can they go other than congregating in the city every night to find solace?
