Ignacio Torres is a photographer I met in my hometown of Denton, Texas. It wasn’t until he moved to New York City, though, that we became friends. I had the honor of working a bit with him this past summer in New York, and through this realized just how unique and phenomenal he really is. He has gained an abundant amount of recognition this past year for his 3D moving GIF photos. And rightfully so. They’re incredible.

Cynthia von Buhler’s Speakeasy Dollhouse is a biographical tale of murder, mafia, and intrigue in New York City told with handmade dolls and sets, in conjunction with an immersive play. It was initially set for a two-night run, limited only to it’s Kickstarter supporters. However, due to overwhelming interest, von Buhler added a Halloween show, and plans to add more dates and locations in the new year.

New York City in the early 1980s saw the break out of hip hop and a whole new style of expression for urban youths. A big part of that was the rise of graffiti, where ‘bombing’ became its own art form. The documentary Style Wars takes a fascinating up close look at the players of the day, what they were up against, and how hip hop culture changed the face of the city.

Liu Bolin’s camouflaging-self is back. This time he’s blending his body into a wall of soda amid a grocery store backdrop in his local Beijing headquarters. Previously ‘the invisible man’ performed similar acts in New York City, which built his firm reputation for artistic stunts.

Sean Sinderbrand is a filmmaker and photographer based in New York City. What I appreciate about him is that he can take anything and make it into something so indescribably beautiful. From models, to candid photos, and short films, his work captures moments that make you feel like you are there. Or at least, you wish you were.

The Depthcore Collective has released it’s latest themed exhibition entitled OBSOLETE. Our members used the chapter as a platform to examine the chronological relevancy of topics ranging from the environment to humanity to technology, and made artwork across a timeline encompassing past, future and present to show the effects of decay and progress of the relationship between these prime entities.

Featuring more than 70 artworks from 50 international artists, its release coincides with our first major presentation at OFFF 2011, as well as our first live exhibition in New York City. Depthcore itself has undergone a major overhaul, with a new focus on inter-chapter content, including interviews, workshops, resources and more.

Exhibiting at Flowers Gallery in New York City, Michael Paige Glover’s new works are influenced by religion, politics, philosophy and the follies of the human race.

You can think of it as an illustrated dark comedy that touches on the comical and the horrific aspects of human nature, such as, love, hypocrisy, mediocrity, consumerism and violence.

This is a really strong shoe, and lasts a long, long time. My dad says that you should replace your shoes every eight months, but I haven’t replaced these in a year and a half. I like running at night. It’s the only time New York City feels empty. There’s only Chinese men fishing in the East River and a few couples making out.

Nico Muhly is a young classical composer and arranger based out of New York City. I first came across his work in relation to arrangements he composed for another artist, Sam Amidon’s record, All Is Well, and one day found myself riding an elevator with him. I was too shy to say hello.

Street Kids is a portraiture series by photographer Adam Taylor that captures the gruelling hardships young people face while living on the streets. His initial shooting in New York City was so successful that he headed to Sydney to discover the same problem: a generation of youth missing a sense of belonging because they are the fall-outs of social and economic change. Where else can they go other than congregating in the city every night to find solace?

Now THIS is a pop-up. Thanks to the collaborative team — ‘a razor, a shiny knife‘ — a group of unassuming, and lucky, diners enjoyed a six-course haute cuisine luncheon served aboard New York’s L train. Words do not do the concept justice. So have a watch.

Erik Sommer is a New York City-based contemporary artist. Focusing primarily on painting, his work is a conversation between age and beauty, capturing the passing of time through the deterioration of texture. His paintings reflect his urban environment, yet maintain a sense of both fragility and aggressiveness.

Charlie Tippie stirs hip hop, rap and electronic with just the right mix of old school soul and beats. His song, Alone Tonight, makes me want to jump on a plane to New York City for his show on March 19. For now, I have to settle for his seven track Mute album on repeat, each song taking me to different places.

Nathan Harger received his B.F.A. in photography from the Cleveland Institute of Art, then completed his M.F.A. in photography at Parsons the New School for Design in 2008. His exhibition debut in New York City was in the critically acclaimed exhibition, Contradictions in Black and White, an exhibition that placed his work alongside Irving Penn, Walker Evans and Ray K. Metzker in 2009.

Paris vs New York City, a tally of two cities, is a cute minimalist graphic design blog about the sometimes tiny, sometimes significant differences between those two metropolis’. Thank goodness we’re allowed to love both of them equally.

An Australian-born artist living and working in New York City, Craig Redman creates colourful and bold artwork across mediums including illustration, painting, sculpture, typography, pattern and editorial design.

In New York City, hip-hop and graffiti run as tight as Wu and Tang. Queens rapper Meyhem Lauren’s new music video for Got the Fever celebrates this hallowed union in glossy HD. Directed by rising photographer Tom Gould, the video catches the city’s finest street artists bombing landmarks across the boroughs. It’s also a beautiful example of the low-budget, DSLR cinematography that’s fast becoming the next major street art.
