You have to hear it to believe it. Porno Klan is a weird music project from a Brazilian producer that likes to mash-up pop artists like Beyonce with underground dirty Brazilian funk or carnival songs. Sometimes he even releases a music video to illustrate the lyrics. And to top that, he creates exotic 80s inspired images for each single.

Check his Beyonce Carnival Remix, Katy Perry Funk Mash-Up and this fantastic (and smoother) mash-up of Rihanna with Barry White.

New Swedish project Laike is the brainchild of Christofer Ståhle. The debut album, Långt från stadslivets dån, is a mysterious collection of songs about escaping modern urban life for the country on which Laike’s formidable guitar skills are augmented by his ethereal vocals and flute chops. Recommended for fans of acoustic music seeking more interesting instrumentation.

Before I wandered over to my current residence in Berlin, I spent four years sampling Baltimore’s seemingly endless source of musical inspiration. Famous for producing Animal Collective, Beach House and Dan Deacon, Baltimore’s cheap rents and ample space for creative exploration have attracted the best the East Coast has to offer, and then some. Among the awesomely talented Charm City groups to ride the wave of success more recently, Wye Oak is one of my iPod staples. Now singer/guitarist Jenn Wasner (who used to wait tables at a restaurant I cooked at #namedrop) is out touring her marvelous Robyn-inspired solo project, Flock of Dimes. Wasner’s combination of catchy folky vocals combined with new-wave wailing guitars and drum machines is especially stirring. I’m excited for more.

For something a bit quieter, Petra (singing) and Caleb (on guitar) perform a heart-stopping bittersweet ballad. Two and a half minutes of soft goodbyes and silent tears. This song is actually for a short film, and I’m not surprised at all.

I spent the summer of 2011 in the US, mainly in Santa Monica. It reminded me of being a kid, of movies like The Lost Boys, and of sitting on the beach watching the sunsets. Our first single, Runaway, is really about knowing that it’s time to leave your childhood behind and take on the world, even if it is from somewhere as beautiful as this place.

At the bright age of 18, Oliver Catt started a bedroom recording outfit called Fantasy Rainbow. Laying down tracks such as, It’s Christmas and I Fucking Hate Myself, it wasn’t long before Catt and fellow collaborator Jonathan Coddington started to create a buzz throughout the UK music scene. One year down the road, and weeks before the release of his debut long player, Bos Taurus, Catt has dropped one of the album tracks, Condominium. One simple fuzzy guitar riff, washy drums and Catt’s stoic vocals combine to tell a somewhat depressing tale – the subtle melody coming from both guitar and vocals.

I think I’m in luvvvv. I first heard We Are Birds of Paradise at an exhibition I participated in at The Others gallery in Hackney, London. I was mesmerized from the first song. The all female French/Australian blues trio are a sultry mix of brooding beats from Rebel Royale and Mlle Chat Noir (who plays everything from the Violin, Saw, Ukulele, and even a Glockenspiel) and the raw, piercing vocals of Scarlet Fever. These gals make the kind of music that makes one walk away with either a tear in the eye, a mischievous grin, or that glassy eyed look you get from witnessing something extraordinary.

The word ‘muse’ is used so frequently and thoughtlessly in this Internet era it has come to mean little more than citing some ex-girlfriend who read Kafka. But viewing the video for St Vincent and David Byrne’s new track, Who, is like witnessing a strange and wonderful Rorschach test in motion.

Each seems to have become the other’s muse in the classical sense; and the union is rational. Both veil their admiration for the science behind music with pop culture, both have wed needle-sharp intelligence to aesthetics through music. Who has been drawn from Vincent and Byrne’s upcoming collaboration Love This Giant, which is currently available for pre-order and set to release on Tuesday September 11.

Originally from Flower Mound, Texas, but now based in Oklahoma City, Horse Thief has been wowing audiences south of America’s Manson-Nixon line with rock that’s as much psycho as psychedelic. They’ve been described as the ‘next Kings of Leon’ – another Oklahoma band – but after electrifying perfomances at 35 Conferette and this year’s SXSW festival, they’ve earned a cadre of their own fanatical fans across the country. Horse Thief’s songs are edgy and emotionally compelling. ‘It’s about losing yourself in the sound and creating an experience that sticks with you long after the show is over’, says frontman Cameron Neal. Australian audiences will be able to judge for themselves with the imminent release of Horse Thief’s debut album, Grow Deep, Grow Wild.

Music rarely captures my attention like Cloudkicker’s dynamic progressive chill-metal on recent album Fade. Like a soundtrack to sitting on the beach alone on an overcast evening, the music is somewhat dark, but calming, with steadily grooving rhythm and high-pitched guitar melodies repeating like distant bells.

I love a somewhat zone-out, hypnotic, Krautrock esque band as much as anyone. It’s probably the best music to work to for me. Beak> is the next great band in that genre and their new album, > >, is one of the major highlights in music this summer. Fans of Portishead and Massive Attack will definitely get into the vibe of Beak>, and both of their albums are worth checking out.

If you can avoid being too fussy about vocal pitch, you might enjoy State and Main by Francisco Castle. A lo-fi production, the songwriting and arranging is what catches my ear. A beginner guitarist could learn these songs fairly easily, but there is depth to these compositions pointing to Castle’s maturity as a writer. Brent Puls handed me his album when he was staying in my out-of-town boyfriend’s apartment and I went over to water the plants. I listened to it twice the next day, back to back. It’s deceptively simple and can fade away into the background if you’re distracted, but its loveliness and catchiness will snap your head back around if you get too far away. There is melancholy threading together the woodwinds, gentle drums and quiet lyrics, and beauty, too.

Am I writing about a musician writing about talking to musicians? Yes, but Weatherman is a far more interesting and less convoluted project than that statement might convey. Annie Higgins sits down with musicians who love and excel at their craft (but may be difficult to slot into a neat box) and devotes time and thought to discussing their work and lives in a deeply satisfying way. A talented and complicated musician herself, Higgins seems to understand that what’s in a musician’s head can be just as fascinating as what we hear from out in the audience.

Almost an homage to early 90′s indie rock, the debut release, Teenage Pagans, by Technicolor Teeth is making my ears very happy. As a longtime fan of early Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, insert-relative-bands-here, I find it refreshing to hear something that takes influences seriously and does right by them. They hail from Wisconsin, the land of cheese, but leave that at the factory and wail weirdness and gay fuzz beautifully and sometimes spastic. I highly recommend acclimating to these guys with a good pair of can-headphones and plenty of volume.

Hot Chip recently teamed up with the Creator’s Project and director Danny Perez to create a new video. The song, Look Where We Are, is off Hot Chip’s most recent album, In Our Heads. In this trippy, funkadelic video, a fantasy is painted around a mad scientist who operates on a model, filling her head with fluff and strawberries. However, once back in the real world, it is apparent that the scientist’s tinkering has had some unintended consequences.
