Every Justice of the Unicorns release gets a little more catchy and a little more serious. Band leader, Rusty Dungan, sounds less like he’s laughing at his own songs on this Double-Single entitled This Old House that releases on Decemeber 1. It’s only two songs, but you’ll play them over and over. Barely controlled twang, a lo-fi vibe, and multiple vocal overdubs gives hint to what the next full length Justice of the Unicorns album might have in store for your happy ears.
I was blown away – not my usual cuppa tea but they were everything you want in a live performance. Pure, undiluted old-style rock n’roll but turned up to 11. Frenzied, fast and loud, all quiff and swagger with some mean piano, this band have a new album fresh out and are making some serious waves.

I didn’t think San Francisco’s Ty Segall could rock much harder after his Slaughterhouse album just released a few months ago. But his third LP of the year (!), Twins, is pretty much the apex of his recording career. Each release is better than the previous one. Twins, recorded with a little more hi-finess allows the overdubbed tracks of solos to cut through, and the monolithic fuzz axes sound like a razorblade slicing through a cinder block. This record is less “garage rock”, which I personally like. It’s great to see a boy turning into a man before your very eyes. What will the insanely prolific Ty Segall do next? Better enjoy Twins while you can, because he’s probably got 10 more new songs already.

The last time I caught up with London-based, Australian band, Howling Bells, was in New York in early 2007 when they played a show at one of the many seedy Lower East Side bars. Since then, they’ve recorded a new album, the aptly named Radio Wars [listen to their song, Treasure Hunt, below], a remarkable follow-up to their 2006 self-titled debut. I checked in with guitarist Joel Stein to find out what music the four-piece had been listening to around the time the album was written: ‘The Byrds’ Eight Miles High always sounds so futuristic to me. It has one of the best guitar sounds ever and really moves me with its color and power. Every time I hear the Tortoise track, I Set My Face to the Hillside, I instantly get transported to the ocean. Beautiful! Joy Division’s Isolation is incredible. I love the intro keyboard riff, in particular (the keyboard was self-built). It expresses urgency and truth. And then there’s Neu!’s Hallogallo, a truly inspiring instrumental track that I always want to go on for longer. Its fuzzy guitars are so warm and vibrant. Perfect!’ Read frontwoman Juanita Stein’s Playlist of inspiring songs.
