My band shared a bill with Brooklyn neofolk outfit Cult of Youth when we opened for ex-Swans vocalist/keyboardist Jarboe. Though Cult of Youth can trace their lineage to bands like Death in June and Sol Invictus, frontman Sean Ragon’s almost screeching vocals and punkish songwriting made me think of the Pogues, which is a good thing. Unlike most other acts of this genre, Ragon and the constantly shifting roster of his live band have a less severe demeanor, making them rather more fun to watch.
If the zombie apocalypse looks anything like Max Kauffman’s artwork, we have nothing to fear because there will be cute zombie birds. Also, zombies in Kauffman’s universe prefer Eskimo kisses to brains. Read more
Pioneering Australian designer Kara Smith can definitely give Urban Originals a run for their money. She creates the most innovative handbags for those that truly want to stand out. Detailed with lovely pockets and vintage buttons, Smith’s retro inspired designs literally transform original vintage fabrics into ‘one-off’ clutches, handbags, totes and accessories. I’m in love with her clutches! But yes, if you missed her over the week end at the Blue Mountain’s Leura Village Fair, she’s stocked in Glebe and Sydney’s Todae store, as well as at a variety of online outlets.

This is the mob scene that was outside the Ugg Boot store on Mercer Street, Soho, yesterday as I made my way through the harping hustle and flow of the downtown post-Christmas shopping crowds. And it’s a pretty familiar sight during winter in New York, with long queues invariably gathered along this stretch of road, waiting impatiently for their own little piece of Down Under warmth. Having never worn Ugg boots, I can’t attest for their ability to keep out the icy chill of a 3pm breeze. But surely the well worn feet of a stampede of New Yorkers can’t be wrong? Read more
Why should the devil have all the good music? Finland’s Holy Blood is a great folk-black metal band by any standard, but its horn-raising tunes are all for the glory of the Good Lord rather than Satan or Odin. What would Jesus do? According to Holy Blood, he’d ride through the forests drinking mead and slaying non-believers.
WE'RE POSTING / SOME OF THE BEST
I live the upbeat, feel good tempo of the new single — A Hundred Hearts — from Philly group, The Swimmers. Off their latest album, People Are Soft, this song is a strangely fitting anthem for the blustery day outside.
