All you photographers out there, a word up on one of the most prodigious emerging photographers in Australia. And if you’re nursing an inadequacy complex, seeing Nirrimi Hakanson’s folio might propel you to briefly flee your aspirations and think about getting a job at the local supermarket. Hopefully, it will inspire you. The self-taught sixteen-year-old Hakanson has been taking photos on a digital SLR since the age of thirteen, after starting out on a disposable camera. Her distinctive style is ethereal and reminiscent of photo albums filled with enchanted childhood memories.

Her subjects (both friends and professional models) are cast in romantic portraits, in sophisticated fashion shots, in scenes of teenagers posing unaffectedly in everyday realms. What stands out amongst the girlish nymphs making friendship pacts with the sunshine is a certain rawness you don’t often see in fashion-oriented photography. This is partly due to Hakanson’s preference for natural light and emotive settings and most certainly due to her visionary nature. This week, Hakanson was announced the winner of the National Youth Week’s junior photography competition.

The Telegraph just posted some photos of the migration of golden rays (also known as cownose rays) off the coast of Mexico. It’s guaranteed to restore your sense of wonder at the world.

Indonesian-Canadian artist and illustrator Tessar Lo has already been making waves in the magazine and gallery circuit. His paintings, combining Asian elements with themes of dreams, nature and human concepts, have an almost mystical aura which clearly resonates with his fans.

Renee Garner is an artist living and working in the suburbs of Charlotte, North Carolina. Of her beautifully simple yet strikingly coloured work, she says: ‘My university background is in Fibers as Fine Arts, and even though my work is mostly drawing and painting, the sensitivity to fibers as a source of line-inspiration is fairly apparent. How to Wrap Five More Eggs: Traditional Japanese Packaging by Hideyuki Oka is an easy read with the story told primarily through the book’s pictures. As the title suggests, it’s all about a traditional form of Japanese packaging, which mostly incorporates food. The idea behind it is that when you present someone with a cake, for instance, and it’s nicely packaged, that they get a feeling that you want them to enjoy the cake. The five eggs of the title are bound with straw and woven in an indigenous way. Hideyuki Oka characterizes the packaging as being as ‘born out of necessity meant to preserve food and make it easily portable, made of whatever material found at hand in the rural areas of their origin’.

British sculptor Andy Goldsworthy uses found materials to make his site-specific pieces. A devout environmentalist, his work aims to draw out the impermanent yet ethereal character of the spaces in which they are placed.

Humans are awful. We’re ruining the world. And though we’re killing most of them off, animals will one day reclaim what we’ve taken from them. This is what Amy Stein’s tragic and haunting photo series Domesticated seems to express.
