Massachusetts-based artist and photographer Arno Rafael Minkkinen, who was born in Helsinki, has a curious photography process. Wherever he roams, he emerges with photo perspectives that are really unique by merging his body with his surroundings. Among his works, the ones from his Hands and Feet series really stand out.

The Afar depression in East Africa is a geologically tumultuous region. On the surface, it looks frozen. Below the surface, magma is having a ball of a time fueling not one, but 12 active volcanoes. And let’s not forget about the geysers, the cauldrons, and even an entire boiling lake of lava. The Afar depression’s low elevation means the Red Sea has often flooded it, leaving behind ‘white gold’, or salt from evaporated seawater.

Somehow, pastoral tribes and salt traders manage to stay put and survive despite all the drama. George Steinmetz captured some really amazing pictures.

Spoiler ahead: owls behaving wickedly. This owl, as seen on a Japanese variety show, knows at least two ways to scare off other beaky threats: puff and fluff up (cute) or supershrink into what looks like a cross between Lord Voldemort and Megatron. It’s a hoot. According to another YouTube user who uploaded another clip of similarly, er, talented owls, this particular owl species might be Florida Eastern Screech Owls. Bird experts, anyone?

Starbucks isn’t the only establishment that uses caffeine and sugar to keep its customers returning. According to studies conducted by Geraldine Wright at Newcastle University, UK, plants spike their nectar with specific sugary flavors and caffeine to keep bees loyal to their flower. The more bees frequent the flower, the more pollen is spread from the flower, meaning the flower’s “offspring” are spreading everywhere. Feels like a lot like all the Starbucks chain coffee houses pooping up everywhere, doesn’t it?

Dylan Garrett Smith is an artist/printmaker. Growing up in the punk and hardcore scene of Northeast Pennsylvania, he began exploring forms of printmaking at a young age to create shirts and patches for friend’s bands, as well as his own, using cardboard stencils and spray paint. Through this basic method of image making, he was able to teach himself crude, basic screen-printing. Since then he has earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts with a concentration in printmaking from Pratt Institute of Art in Brooklyn. Smith’s current work is made primarily through drawing techniques, using ashes, chalk lead and ink, exploring occultism and solitude, as well as the relationships, and continually growing distance, between humans and the natural world.

Jade Cove is a secluded Central California beach about 30 miles north of Hearst Castle. Its name comes from the vulcanized yellow/green jade rocks that wash up naturally on the shore. Jade collecting is permitted above the shore line and rock hounds can take their finds to the Big Sur Jade Company where a jeweler makes necklaces and charms. Score!

The bizarre combination of freezing cold winter and active volcanos are married together in these stunning photos by Denis Budko. The two seemingly opposite elements are found existing harmoniously in the cave of the far east peninsula known Kamchatka in Russia. Until 1991, the caves were strictly off limits to foreigners. But ever since the fall of the Soviet Union, fantastic natural wonders like this have been shared with the rest of the world.

This is the bedroom design kids dream about. Created by Fajno, MyMi brings a forest atmosphere into your house. Two vertical windows allow enough light to enter the room, highlighting every element of the design. The full effect will blow away any kid as they open to the door to see a decorated wall with pictures of fir-trees, a bed and a chair that look like a valley covered with moss, and a cute hut. When Vimeo user Mark Peters built a torpedo rig for his GoPro camera and dipped it underwater 20 miles west of Santa Cruz, he didn’t count on a bunch of tech-loving Pacific white sided dolphins to show up next. While there’s been some controversy about whether the footage was CGI-rigged or secretly seeded by GoPro, there’s just no faking just how awesome dolphins are. When they’re not busy calling each other names, they are doing all manners of cool things like staging rescue efforts for fellow dolphins in distress in the waters off South Korea.

The Eden Project is essentially the largest greenhouse on the planet. Imagine a huge glass domed area that can hold the Tower of London inside. Cornwall’s monstrously huge RainForest enclosed environment, or Biome, was built on the remains of an exhausted china clay quarry. Today the bubble shaped structure is home to over 1 million plants. Now that’s a rags to riches story.

Choi and Shine have designed a series of giant electric pylons for the Icelandic Pylon Competition. They are described as being powerful, solemn and variable and that seeing the pylon-figures will become an unforgettable experience, elevating the towers to something more than merely a functional design of necessity. The mark of a great photographer is the ability to imagine a scene from a different perspective. Anyone can hold an expensive camera and take the expected, cliche photos, but a creative mind thinks outside the box in order to get interesting shots. In the case of photographer Andre Ermolaev, he is able to abstract and recreate Icelandic landscapes by shooting them from an aerial view. We are transported to a new, alien world of craters, unnatural colors, shimmering waterways, and jagged coastlines. The photos feel as though we are viewing another planet via NASA satellite.

Sam Thayer is simply the best wild food author I’ve ever come across. I’ve learned so much from his books and from his direct instruction over the years. He’s definitely the guy to take with you if you are lost in the woods, wondering what you can eat. Actually, if Thayer were with you, you wouldn’t be lost! In all my foraging time spent outdoors harvesting wild plants, bringing them home, processing, cooking and eating them, I have yet to prove Thayer wrong with his methods or postulations.
