Our friends at the Brooklyn Filmmakers Collective are having a party at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on July 17 which will feature a screening of twenty films about the end of the world shot and edited by Collective members, followed by a live performance from the awesome Brooklyn-based band, the Midnight Masses.
Are Mokkelbost aka ION makes the most intense collages you will ever see. The source images are almost completely unrecognizable as the Norwegian artist creates new forms, fields of depth, and color gradients. Oh, ok, so now I’ve seen it all. Or perhaps, in this case, I’m not seeing enough. Japanese game shows are so much fun. Seriously.
As a child, I took piano exams in over-sized white rooms, on baby grand pianos that felt unfamiliar and echoed strangely as someone across the room observed me in silence. It felt clinical, intimidating and completely devoid of warmth. Last week, I started noticing upright pianos, some painted haphazardly, others respectfully untouched plonked in the most unlikely places throughout Sydney. There was one on the edge of the baby pool at the local swimming pool, with a young girl in a rainbow striped dress tapping out a happy but disjointed melody; another shaded under a tree at the park on the way home. The uber-hip French producer M83 has compiled a Secret Playlist for us in which he props Brian Eno, Julee Cruise, and Tears For Fears’ Head Over Heels: ‘This song was the biggest influence for my new album.
