On his website, Rutger offers: ‘What started out as taking pictures for fun, during a boring Masters study, turned into scuba-diving with sharks, having snowboarders miss me by inches (sometimes not), standing between 30,000 raving people or climbing active volcanoes while seeing the furthermost corners of the earth. The choice of doing what I loved instead of what I learned was the best decision I ever made!’

The organizers invite only indie, low-fi, experimental, and avant-garde artists who are worth showing, including bands like The Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr. This year’s special event is devoted to Frederic Chopin. Born in Poland 200 years ago, the composer’s music will be mixed by artists such as Fennesz and William Basiński. In addition, well-known artists, like Wilhelm Sasnal, are invited every year to paint murals in the city. This year, the OFF Festival has changed the location from Poland’s Mysłowice to Katowice. Definitely worth visiting.

Rock al Parque is the largest open-air free music festival in Latin America, held at the el Parque Simon Bolivar in Bogota, Colombia. This year the main guest, as usual, was the heavy rain. However, more than 300,000 people enjoyed the powerful and eclectic tunes of 45 bands from England, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, America, France and, of course, Colombia, since the aim of the festival is to showcase upcoming local bands. The Philharmonic Orchestra of Bogota is in charge of this unique open party, which has been gathering youngsters from all the corners of this ten million city, and beyond, for fourteen years.
During three days of rain, mud and rock’n'roll, the enthusiastic audience enjoyed a metal loaded Saturday, with bands like Carcass (England), Ratos de Porao (Brazil), and Paradise Lost (England), along with local bands, Koyi K Utho and Masacre.

A wet and vibrant Saturday saw the Cumbia-ska of Panteon Rococo (Mexico), reggae from Chile from Gondwana, local ‘funny punk’ performed by Odio a Botero, alternative rock by the avant-garde Babasonicos (Argentina), and a great closing act by the awesome Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

And a cold, emotional and unforgettable Monday took in Sergent Garcia’s ‘fusion-vibes’ from France, experimental rock from Mexico by Austin TV, and the incredible Bloc Party, with the remarkable voice of Kele Okereke who made this edition of Rock al Parque memorable.

After three days of the worst weather and the best music in my hometown, now battling with a fierce cold, I can say this festival is the must amazing scenario of tolerance around the music spirit in the world.

As the final festival devotees gather their bags, pick up their muddy gumboots, and make their long journey home, the hills of Byron Bay seem eerily quiet. Over 17,500 music fans poured into Belongil Fields for the three day Splendour in the Grass event to watch music juggernauts Devo, Sigur Ros, Wolfmother, The Presets and The Cold War Kids do their thing.

Highlights of the bill included a few Australian acts rocking out, with notable performances by The Grates and The Presets with their brilliant new sophmore albums, The Panics, Yves Klein Blue and the ever-so talented Clare Bowditch. Crowd pleasers Wolfmother and Van She had everybody dancing, and The Wombats and The Cold War Kids cemented their popularity with fantastic shows that was a highlight for many. With Splendour 2008 officially over, and the very real possibility that the festival has played its last show in Byron Bay, I’ve have to say, Splendour I salute you.

It’s the final, sultry day of Barcelona’s experimental sound-fest, Sonar, and weary punters are gazing listlessly at an empty, smoke-filled stage. Before long, a vocalist, beatboxer and grand pianist stride on, and what follows is a startling and, at times, deeply melancholic cabaret-electronic hybrid, prompting jaws to drop and delighting the drowsy. Meet Khan of Finland: ‘I tell stories about my everyday life; they are songs about love, pain, party and spirituality. I would call it bionic blues’.

‘We recently played a poetry festival in Rotterdam’, he says. ‘And the soundman didn’t know how to put a microphone in front of us. It was a technical disaster but we managed okay, thanks to vodka and the audience screaming and dancing — and I think that’s the blues thing. You can make people feel and understand the moment music is created’.
