In 1983, a young woman is locked away at a state-of-the-art experimental facility, doped and duped into controlling her special powers by a demented doctor. Held prisoner, her psychedelic reality is pushed to the test as the doctor’s sanity begins slipping, and the young woman must escape the facility before it is too late.

Originally released in 2010, Panos Cosmatos’ Beyond the Black Rainbow was finally released on home video in 2012. And it is easily the best movie of this year. The art design, lensing, soundtrack by Sinoia Caves all polish the plastic of perceived reels of an unremembered ’80s.

What seems like homage to dated John Carpenter-ripoffs that went straight to video and Saturday-afternoon poor programming, playing after American Ninja and Battle Beyond the Stars, turns out to be a slow-burning, deeply disturbing horror movie. After viewing the trailer, I expected the film to be even more experimental, something like the hallucinations of Enter the Void.

But instead, I found a patient portent building to unexpected excitement, thrills and horror. What some may view as pretentious, I found perceptive, and the film ends up feeling like a horror-ode to 2001: A Space Odyssey, filling frames with careful compositions and technological terrors.

I recently watched this movie because I’m a huge fan of Stanley Kubrick. It talks about the (possible) hidden meanings the director put in the film, The Shining. Things such as his involvement in faking the Apollo 11 moon landing or his thoughts on the slaughter of the American Indians. They even talk about watching the movie forwards and backwards at the same time and show some cool examples of how this works together. While some of the ideas seem a bit far fetched, I must admit it was pretty fascinating.

Finally! It’s here. I’ve been waiting for months to see what Wes Anderson has come up with for his latest film. Visually, I was excited; musically, I was impressed. I mean, the man has taste. Although it’s not my favorite from the Wes Family of Movie Goodness, it was definitely worth watching. Yes, Wes has a certain style: his screen is slightly tinged with a sunbaked orange and the characters are constantly wearing pants an inch too short. But that’s why I love him.

Adapted from Ian McEwan’s best selling novel, Atonement is a softly perfumed story of love, passion and jealousy bound within youth. Novice writer, 13-year-old Briony Tallis, fueled by the jealousy of her older sister Cecilia (Keira Knightly) and her lover Robbie’s (James McAvoy) igniting romance, accuses Robbie of a crime he did not commit, leading to his incarceration. This malicious and childish accusation irrevocably changes all their lives forever. Apparently Keira Knightly was originally approached to play the young Briony, though she was eager to play the older sister Cecila, a twist in casting that worked wonders. Knightly’s performance was one of her finest, and it made way for the casting of young actress, Saoirse Ronan, who injected the movie with a hauntingly accurate portrayal of a
young girl’s fears and misconceptions of the adult world. The best period adaptation since BBC’s Pride and Prejudice, this movie comes with a contemporary sophistication.
