A long time ago, in the days of Myspace, I sent Matt my music, early solo recordings, because I thought what he was making was really beautiful. I was lucky enough to meet him a few times in New York and since then I have followed his work, as it’s grown to expand both visually and narratively. I am most excited for his latest film, I Used To Be Darker, not yet out, which centers around the lives of a musician couple and their family. The website offers an enticing trailer and great behind the scenes photos and his other films, Hamilton and Putty Hill, are also worth checking out.

Written and directed by Will Kempner, Chris Gilman, and Jeff Marks, it intertwines a pair of drug dealers, two twisted cops who can’t get along, local burnouts, bridge trolls, and more.
Back in the hoary days of 1997, an ad appeared in the classifieds section of Backwoods Home Magazine calling for a partner to accompany the advertiser in a trip through time. The respondent was urged to bring their own weapons and that their safety was not guaranteed. The ad caused a minor storm, until it was eventually revealed as a joke written as filler by the senior editor. Independent filmmakers Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly ran with this old nugget of modern folklore, and earlier this year released to critical acclaim their clever little film Safety Not Guaranteed. The film deserves a wide audience; just don’t expect machine-guns versus dinosaurs and you’ll be fine.

Quite simply, this was the most powerful movie I’ve seen in a long, long time. It altered my mood for a full two weeks after watching. Margaret is the second feature written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan (writer/director of You Can Count on Me, and a prominent playwright and screenwriter).

Featuring Anna Paquin, Mark Ruffalo, Matt Damon, and Allison Janney (who gives such a heart-stopping performance in only a single, early scene that her character’s presence is palpably felt for the entire film), Margaret is a forceful, elegant, beautiful, and at times extremely shocking meditation on tragedy, or more accurately, on the things that happen to/upon us and the ways in which we do or cannot reconcile them into a functioning notion and practice of existence.

The story follows a 6 year old girl, Hush Puppy (played by stunning new-comer Quvenzhane Wallis), and her father living in an isolated fishing island south of the delta. After they are nearly wiped out by a storm, Hush Puppy brilliantly battles fate and the potential extinction of her people. A unique and passionate take on Americana.

Twitch recently reported on Rico Maria Ilarde’s Pridyider (The Refrigerator) with an alert about the new trailer. There’s a bit of history behind the movie, too. As an expansion of an old short film from the long-running horror film series Shake, Rattle & Roll, it definitely has cult cred.

All humans want to be remembered after they die, even if they don’t admit it. Most have children to accomplish this, and others have children, write fiction and then delve into philosophy in their later life. Count Leo Tolstoy is more the later, and this film focuses on the period as he approaches death.

Tolstoy is under pressure from the leader of a movement he inspired to hand over the rights to his work so that, the cult leader claims, they may be read as widely as possible. Paul Giamatti turns in a stellar performance as the controlling sycophant Vladimir Chertkov, however the standout is Helen Mirren as a tortured and passionate Sofya Tolstaya. The tale is presented through the young and sexually awakened Valentin Bulgakov, a newcomer to this schizophrenic household. By no means a thrilling ride, but still a compelling and thoughtful meditation on the mistakes even the most intelligent of us can be drawn into.
