One third of a brilliant film, this thriller begins by creating stifling tension. A wealthy family arrive at their holiday home, then two youths invade and their model manners and speech provide a stark and disjointing contrast to their increasingly violent actions. The motivations and intentions of the youths remain unknown. As they act without emotion, their unexplained and extreme politeness adds to the terror. The tension is then ruined as the director attempts to make a political point about violence in cinema, and once the film becomes a farce, empathy for the characters is lost. The ease with which director Michael Haneke creates a top-quality thriller then destroys it is infuriating. But it has created debate, which was perhaps the point, and means the film is worth seeing just to make up your own mind.

Milwaukee’s Neon Hunk make spastic, synth-and-drum madness that is likely to trigger seizures in the uninitiated. Their psychotic, candy-colored aesthetic — complete with terrifying masks and stuffed animals — gives no quarter to the faint of heart, but for those whose retinas and ear canals are sufficiently fortified with scar tissue, the duo’s glitched-out dance attack should provide ample cause to bounce around. Clusters of mysterious balloons, packs of terrifying cats, bunnies, and burning people, and other absurd or abstract elements haunt Andrea Galvani’s beautiful and eerie landscape photos. The Italian artist’s work seems to comment on man’s hand in altering nature. Read more
A Melbourne native once said to me: to find the good bars, you have to look for the bins in alleyways. Section 8 totally fits that quota. It is a bar that is a. in an alleyway, and b. filled with trash. As enticing as that sounds, I must make it clear that the alleyway is actually an old carpark in Chinatown and the trash is not exactly trash. But don’t let that stop you. Section 8 is pumping.
