French artist Ciou is inspired by a wonderful mix of music, pin ups, manga, primitive religious art, art nouveau, tattoos, old toys and Mexican culture. She combines her own marvellous lowbrow Necro Kawaï art style with forms from popular pictures and old techniques. The little girls and monsters are cute and sweet but with an ominous darkness. Ciou’s solo exhibition, Á Spell On You, can be seen until April 20 at the KochxBos gallery in Amsterdam.

Brian Castleforte is a independent artist, creative director, motion graphics designer, and animator based in Los Angeles and the founder of NicePaperToys, the first papertoy social network. For anyone who hasn’t heard of papertoys, think of it as a mash-up of origami and designer toys, a viral Internet art movement that used to be limited to designers and illustrators.

Papertoy Monsters is a fabulous book created by Brian (Workman, January 2011) and it’s the first papertoy book made especially for kids (though crafters, toy collectors, techies, and gamers of all ages will enjoy it, too). With 50 die-cut templates, all you have to do is pop them out, fold, and glue. There’s no cutting. Everything is prefolded. Simple as that.

Shing Yin Khor (aka Sawdust Bear) describes herself as ‘a sculptor and illustrator inspired by monsters, tentacles, mediocre science fiction movies, bikes, Dungeons and Dragons, and really adorable cats’. Some of her sculpted characters appear in Marlowe the Monster, a webcomic about a lumpy, multi-eyed monster who goes on bad dates and suffers from social anxiety, which he soothes by eating cake.

Marlowe is also the star of Khor’s first book, Marlowe the Monster Volume 1. Khor, a Californian who shows her work at San Diego ComicCon and other geeky venues, is currently creating a new line of rather anxious creatures called larms and scaleybugs which will be featured at a November show in Albuquerque, NM.

Theo Ellsworth makes obsessively detailed drawings and self-publishes comics, mini comics, and zines about imaginary people and places. The cosmic imagery, subtle geometry, and implied animism in his works recall the epic, heroic, and odd imagery of Jean ‘Moebius’ Girard, Mayan ruins, and the Nazca lines, filtered through the jam-packed and often psychedelic lens of underground comix from the 70s. For Imaginary Friends, at San Francisco’s GRSF Gallery, Ellsworth is making 30 pieces using pen and ink, colored pencil, and watercolor. A quarter of them will be woodcuts. According to the artist, recurring themes include but are not limited to ‘parades of monsters, people made of leaves, scaled and antlered beasts, flying machines, complicated structures, and dreams’. The show runs between July 18 and August 19.
