Artist Momoko Hatano is an emerging jewellery designer, who used her experience working in a silver jewellery workshop as inspiration to launch her own label in 2009. Sculptural and often loaded with meaning, her pieces possess a quirky sense of aesthetic, which is a result of her fine arts background. Ornamentation, animals, found objects, and her own drawings are constant themes embodied within her jewellery work. Hatano’s practice consist of one-off experimental wearables, exhibition works, commissions and contemporary yet timeless pieces that are meticulously hand-crafted in her Sydney based studio. London-based artist Richard Hughes incorporates incongruous looking objects into his work to create art that is sometimes humorous. Inviting questions as to the history and function of the pieces, upon closer inspection, these objects reveal themselves as meticulously cast replicas of readily available every-day objects. The OP-1 is the most gorgeous synth/sampler I have ever seen. The layout and sounds it can produce seem quite unique and ideal for production and live use. It was also in part developed by the same guy who created the software I use to make music on a Game Boy — LSDJ by Johan Kotlinski.
The very talented Jess Snow, the first video artist to be featured by Female Persuasion — the original site for provocative and political female artists — has created this ethereal short video for Lost At E Minor. Lookie here! A bike path in Seoul that plays music as people ride over it. The path is made of planks of wood of varying lengths that trigger little hammers when people ride over them, creating little percussive notes. Happy fun place yay!
No one disputes that the Bush Administration is no friend to civil liberties, but this little spot on the ACLU website smacks of paranoia. At least it’s entertaining, and some people might actually welcome the ultra-convenient vision of the future this piece of propaganda offers.
Anyone who thinks black metal is too rigid and narrow a genre to have room for innovation would do well to check out Lifelover, a Swedish band that defies every convention of black metal while still remaining miraculously kvlt. The sextet wafts between languid, hallucinatory grooves that channel Iggy Pop and latter-day Cure to unhinged freak-outs that sound as if they’re emanating from the deepest, coldest forests of Norway.
Heavily influenced by music and film, the design team at Conquer Gear showcases their tees not as clothes, but indubitably as limited edition art pieces. That said, I wonder what film or music piece inspired Mr. Owl picture t shirt [below]? Led Zeppelin came to mind, but then so did Joni Mitchell!. As for film inspirations, Clockwork Orange, Lord of the Rings and Out of Africa. Hmmm, maybe I’m not so good at this afterall. Read more
