Listening to Cities Aviv reminds me of my first summer with a car. Aviv’s flow does whatever it wants on top the dreamy beats of Digital Lows. Float On is a perfect example of this. I imagine Aviv heard this Modest Mouse cover and knew exactly what to do with it.

After blowing people’s minds at the Capital Hill Block Party, then surprising everyone at Bumbershoot, then hopping down to Portland for Musicfest NW, Black Whales have made quite a name for themselves in the past year. One listen to “Young Blood” from their brand new EP, Origins, should clue you in on how far this young band is set to go. The EP was released last month on Mt. Fuji Records. We checked in with Davey Brozowski from the band and asked him to tell us about the music that inspired it. He started with Modest Mouse’s Whale Song [listen below]: ‘”I knew I was a scout, I should have found my way out” are the only vocal lines in the song and they only take up a minute or so of time. The rest is a musical jam that builds and builds into an epic ending that’s littered with different layers of guitar hooks, noise and percussion. Live, it’s even better. The premise behind the Lomographic Amigos program is simple: The Lomographic Society International equips selected photographers, musicians and other creative types with a Diana F+ camera and some film and asks them to shoot the film for them, which is then displayed on their website. Former Lomo Amigos have included Radiohead, Modest Mouse, and David Arquette. These beautiful Lomo shots above and below were taken by Feature Shoot founder and editor, Alison Zavos, whose own photography has been featured in the American Photography annual. Read more
Murray Lightburn, frontman for Canadian indie group, The Dears, gave us the rundown for our sister site, My Secret Playlist, on the tunes that are currently on high rotation on his inner-ear iPod. He started with the Air song, Mike Mills [listen below]: ‘I’ve been working from my home studio and have a few tracks that I play in it because I am very familiar with how they sound. Mike Mills, aside from being a well-composed track, sounds really good. When the strings come in towards the end, I am wishing that I had written it’. Schmidt, Hammer and Lassen’s design for the Copenhagen national library is a celebrated structure in the already glittering design portfolio of northern Europe. The marble and glass façade of The Black Diamond (yes, that is what their national library is called) is an example of architectural brilliance, with even the angled walls designed to best mirror the city’s beautiful canals.
This has to be one of the best design websites going around. The greatest part of the website is how you can filter design by colour. Mix and match a couple of colours and BANG! It will show you all the designs that utilize them.
Ian Brown has never been a man to look back. Formerly the lead singer of the Stones Roses – an eclectically talented group that never quite reached full potential – he has since carved out a successful solo career, moving well beyond the poppy melodrama of Fools Gold and into a more left-field sonic terrain. Communication prosthesis by Sascha Nordmeyer
This ‘communication prosthesis’ by designer Sascha Nordmeyer is hilarious and awesome. I want to wear one to a job interview.
Inspired by the unique digital clock apps created by the designer, Sean Zoega, the i-toc watch is a colorful physical manifestation of digital ideas featuring bespoke two-disc Japan quartz movement. The outer gradient displays the minutes while the inner gradient shows the hours. The rings interact, creating an ever-changing pattern of design and colour.
