Danilo Brandao is a Sydney-based Brazilian artist and graphic designer. I had the pleasure of exhibiting some of his work in a group show last year and immediately fell in love with his style. If there is a true all-rounder out there, it’d have to be this guy. From producing eye-catching detailed collage work, to tight design work and quirky illustrations, the future looks very bright for him.

Anatoly Konenko has several micro miniatures, most of which have been recognised as being the world’s smallest. He has meticulously written tiny books and crafted several pieces of art on media as diverse as rice, poppy seed, and human hair.

These trees are living, breathing, balloon carrying, leaf tossing creatures. Created during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven (22-30 October 2011), the project celebrated the visual transformation of forests. The series included photography as well as a cool video. Watching the beautiful variety and change in this series will make you think twice about treating trees as simple, non-living objects.

These cool illustrations from Shane McAdams were created using an unexpectedly fresh media: try ball point pen, oil, and resine on panel. Step into a world of synthetic landscapes that are bursting with scenes of abstract bright colors. Some of the imagery is naturalistic and comfortable, but each piece sports neon colors, even where you’d least expect it. This is the power of pure color right here.

Not sure what we’d do if we were to stumble upon a USB flash drive embedded in a wall in the streets. Essentially an anonymous offline peer-to-peer file-sharing initiative hosted in public spaces, the Dead Drops project is driven by Berlin-based media artist Aram Bartholl who mounts the USB drives empty at the start and lets anyone plug in his or her laptop to share data. Fascinating.

What a lovely painting, right? Ehhh, not quite. Artist Shintaro Ohata combines painting on canvas and sculpture in his amazing mixed-media work. When viewing his art straight on, the viewer sees a dynamic one-dimensional image. But at any other angle, you can see the piece for what it really is: a sculpture in front of a painting. Amazingly innovative.

APP ART is a quirky exhibit of new works by Chris Georgalas and Peter J. Ketchum at the scruffy TNC Gallery on 1st Ave, New York. With warped sensibilities Ketchum investigates the past refelected in vintage printed matter: ads, card games, matchbooks and black and white photos from the 1860s to the 1960s. In repurposing these words and images, the new work becomes uniquely his own. Actually, who else would claim them? Georgalas combines images with found objects – a full BED! – to make funny, melancholy, challenging pictures. He’s been called the new Duchamp. Yikes! The exhibition runs until October 26.

As if working with models such as Gisele Bundchen and being published in Vogue were not enough for French photographer, Jean-Francois Lepage, he now merges fashion with art. Adding finely crafted linework and collage to his images, Lepage’s pushes his work further to explore ‘insights on individuality, mortality, and the unspoken forces which guide the sublime emotional instincts of the human mind’.

I became aware of Russell Mills as the illustrative designer of More Dark than Shark and the Brian Eno compilation, More Blank Than Frank/Desert Island Selection. I admire his approach of using a mixed-media technique similar to Robert Rauschenberg’s, along with creating the Nine Inch Nails logo using a blacksmith/metal worker to make his design out of steel, then burying it in the ground for a while to rust and tarnish.
