Minnesota? Well, it’s cold. That’s about all we know. Gold, I mean. It’s gold. In all fairness, there’s actually much to be said for this city in terms of music—apparently full of young and savvy creatives doing their thing at a cheap cost of living. One act in particular that we can’t stop listening to is the cheeky synth-pop trio Solid Gold and their debut album, Bodies of Water. And though the boys must have some solid balls to name themselves Solid Gold (not being officially signed and all), well they’re about as indie as indie can get these days. Ironically, they were turned down by iTunes to distribute digitally, after proudly mentioning they were unsigned and completely self-produced. Go figure. Anyhow, the tracks sound sharp and seamless, and dare I say worthy of a little repeat. Either way, keep your eyes and ears open for these gents. They’re bound to warm things up at a party near you.

When I did the Master Cleanse diet a few years ago — the one where you consume nothing but lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper for ten days — I sat at work looking at pictures of food as if they were porn. Scanwiches would have gotten me hot and bothered like nothing else.
California-based artist Andrew Brandou draws from the children’s books, as well as the tripped-out, cult obsessed, disillusioned zeitgeist of the 70s when his early consciousness took shape. The storybook-ish quality of his works creates a sort of narrative of the tectonic shifts that have taken place in the psyche of an entire generation — anthropomorphic animals frolic in subtly Japanese-lacquer-inspired landscapes as gas-mask-wearing cops creep, grinning skulls loom, elevated freeways overwhelm the rising sun, and bloody murder scenes remain hidden just beyond the view of the paintings’ innocent subjects. Austin-based Future Clouds and Radar, the eclectic art-pop ensemble headed by Robert Harrison, has recently released its sophomore recording, Peoria. Where their self-titled debut album showed Harrison as the central figure in a large musical cast, Future Clouds and Radar’s latest offering finds the core band focusing their kaleidoscopic vision into a single cinematic narrative about the illusory nature of mortality. Throughout, Harrison stays true to his genre-hopping eclecticism, leading the journey through a maze of fuzz-box vocals and ethereal keys.
