It seems the music world is still gaga for MJ. Michael Jackson: The Remix Suite features remixes by the Neptunes, Polow Da Don and Dallas Austing. I particularly dig this version of ABC produced by Salaam Remi.

In Kim Lenz’s cool new video for Zombie For Your Love, she goes on a full moon date to the wildest bar in town and shows her date why she’s ‘not like other girls’. Sound familiar? Yes, it’s a not-so-subtle nod to Michael Jackson’s Thriller, though the video was started in June, before he passed away.

Mickey Jackson Mouse, an artwork by atelier Alessio Blanco for Walt Disney Company, was created a few weeks before Michael Jackson died and is based around the idea that ‘Mickey Mouse is an anthropomorphic mouse trying so hard to look like a man but can now resort to plastic surgery to achieve his main goal’. The artwork is currently on display in Hong Kong’s Times Square. Read more

From the Motown archives, this is a rare radio session recorded in the early 70s and featuring the original Jackson 5 — Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael — all interviewing one another. During the podcast you’ll hear a very young sounding Michael talk about his favorite sports, bands, even what he looks for in a girl – all an instinctive brotherly banter, providing a nice reminder of where it all began. We’ve just had word that the doyen of pop quirkiness, Michael Jackson, has been rushed to a Los Angeles hospital after having a suspected heart attack. It’s tragic news. Such a brilliant performer, an endlessly mysterious figure, and a gifted songwriter, as this classic cut confirms.

The bio of San Fransisco-based illustrator Jenn Porreca says it all way better than I ever could: ‘Some time ago, Jenn Porreca moved from the edges of the real world to the edges of the underground. Read more

It’s hard not to sigh at another vector face or skull and diamond combo. I’m guilty of skull overindulgence myself. But Six Letter Word — aka illustrator, Diogo Potes — balances skulls with other macabre themes to create art that actually looks fresh and interesting. Read more

I love the bold colours and childlike themes in the illustrations of Atlanta, Georgia-based artist, Jessica Gonacha. It’s like Spring time all year round. Read more

I spent the formative first six years of my life in Wellington, New Zealand, a beautiful windswept city framed by a magnificent harbour in one direction and a stunning collection of green, rolling hills in the other. It was here, on a return visit many years later and deep amongst the clipped accents and ruddy faces of the weather-beaten locals, that I stumbled upon the vast catalogue of the then Dunedin based record label Flying Nun. And what a roster of acts they housed — The Chills, The Bats, The Clean, Tall Dwarfs, The Verlaines, and my favourite guitar-pop band, Straitjacket Fits. Read more

I’m a big fan of Alex Turner’s side project, The Last Shadow Puppets. It’s just really good music. When I first got their record, I didn’t know if it was a re-issue or if it was brand new. It doesn’t sound like a jokey pastiche. It sounds sincere.

Car from made ice

Forget battery powered vehicles. Cars made from ice are the future of transportation: no pollution, no honking horns, no painful rap music blasting out of souped up stereos. And if they melt, they melt. You just swim the rest of the way down the slipstream.

Kris Kuksi

Good thing Kris Kuksi channelled the trauma of growing up with an alcoholic stepfather, his disdain for ‘the typical American life and pop culture’, and his fascination with the macabre into obsessive, baroque assemblages, paintings, and drawings. Read more

Scanners’ new single Salvation

I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.
