There is a long standing tradition for jambands to don a ‘musical costume’ for Halloween and cover an album in its entirely. The band Umphrey’s McGee has taken this concept a step further by performing ‘live mashups‘ for their Halloween gigs. They cleverly juxtapose two songs on top of each other, and then proceed to tear the roof off. Highlights from this year were a Robert Palmer and Prince mashup (Addicted to Kiss) and a MGMT and Nirvana mashup (Come As Your Kids).

It’s 12.54am and I’m finding it difficult to sleep. I’ve got post-gig excitement pulsing through my veins and I can’t get his voice out of my head. But I don’t mind. Who cares about waking up early for work and responsibilities when you’ve just come home from watching an amazing Icelandic specimen like Jonsi. What a man. I am a heterosexual, female, omnivore who is proud to say, ‘I am madly in love with a gay male vegan!’

I was first drawn to MGMT by the awesome Ausgang album cover for Congratulations, and they did not disappoint. They are like a secret spaceship hidden in your garage waiting to jet you away to world smoothed over with imagination and magic.

So MGMT are set to bring back their flutes, horns and psychedelic falsetto melodies on their forthcoming album, Congratulations. But this teaser track seems to cram every imaginable genre into the space of less than five minutes, resulting in an interesting sound, to say the least. You will either love, hate — or like myself — allow this groove to grow on you in time. [Listen to the new MGMT song Flash Delirium here]

Forget wigs for kitties! These are just for cool cats. French-born, London-based hair master Charlie Le Mindu creates the most outrageous wigs and hair dresses, tapping the deepest, darkest recesses of his fiery Parisian imagination. His famous clients include MGMT, Peaches and the (almost) equally outrageous, Lady Gaga. Read more

Did I say forget MGMT? Forget me. This Justice remix of the Brooklyn band’s breakhit hit may have been floating around for a while now, but’s still phat. And I mean fat. [listen to Management before they were MGMT]

Forget MGMT, well, for the next five minutes anyway. Yeasayer are the hottest band out of Brooklyn, and they have a new video to prove it. Their single, Ambling Alp, sounds like Nik Kershaw locked in a wind tunnel.

So here are my picks of acts to watch in 2008 from this year’s SXSW — Jeremy Jay: New K records signing. Sounds like The Microphones meets Buddy Holly; David Banner: political effusive Hip Hop from the heart; Iglu & Hartley: the next buzz band. Epic new wave pop from Hollywood; The Dodos [above]: the most talked about band at SXSW. Everyone wants a piece of this ethnocentric psych band. Read more

So I just got back from SXSW, and what a blast! SXSW is one of the most hectic, insane three day parties your kidneys could ever endure. It’s so messed up that even the most messed people up think it’s messed up! Read more

Like It, Stamp It! This new, Instagram-style Iphone app allows you to give a ‘stamp of approval’ to the things you like and share it instantly. In doing so, it avoids the confusion you can experience with 1 to 5 star ratings, which can sometimes be hard to figure out. Brilliant!
Heavy metal and hip-hop are perhaps the most popular forms of rebellion for kids the world over. In Malaysia, metal — particularly black metal — has taken such a strong hold that the Fatwa Council there banned it, fearing that the music would compel listeners to rebel against religion. Contrary to the council’s intentions, black metal is as popular as ever in Malaysia, and is a recognizable cultural touchstone there, as indicated by the above clip from the 2005 film Filem Rock.
