I have discovered the greatest music video ever created. Adult Swim asked Mastodon for a song for their Singles Program: ‘when they sent us this incredible jam, we knew we had to make a video for it.’ And they did. Watch on in awe.

Australian band Dappled Cities have a new album, Wall Of Zounds, and a national tour of Australia underway. We checked in with bassist Alex Moore and asked him about the music that inspired the new recording. He started with the Mastodon song, Oblivion [listen below]: ‘I really like the new Mastodon record, Crack the Skye. This song is a real shout-out to where they are heading. It is pretty metal but also — disturbingly — 70s prog. Totally progarific’.

Atlanta’s Withered probably don’t want people spreading the word that they’re nice guys, but they are, despite the filthy, anguished, blackened sludge metal they play. Guitarists Chris Freeman and Mike Thompson once had a grindcore band with Mastodon bassist Troy Sanders, but look elsewhere if you want something radio-friendly – these guys are currently on tour with black metal icons Marduk to give you an idea which side of the dark divide they’re on. These guys put on a truly hellish live show complete with columns of red light and movie-set quality fog machine.

Lisa Jane Persky takes beautiful, beautiful, photographs. To be fair, she also took my book jacket photo, but that doesn’t make her work less amazing. She covers a ton of ground: visit her site to look at vintage, CBGB’s era Debbie Harry, but stay for everything else.

Artist Aaron Smith creates manly portraits of men that existed back in the old days. His bright colors give these vintage men a fresh look. I saw one of his recent shows in New York and the surface of his paintings are thick with textured paint. Wonderful work. Read more

The very talented Jess Snow, the first video artist to be featured by Female Persuasion — the original site for provocative and political female artists — has created this ethereal short video for Lost At E Minor. This striking design — still in the planning stages — aims to covert a desolate, disused sand mine into a thriving environmental preserve and eco-resort. The development lists an impressive array of green designs, including living walls and a five-acre green roof, and effortlessly succeeds in that all important eco-feature of blending in with its surrounding environment. In the lead-up to one of the most anticipated and controversial Olympic Games in Beijing, Boston.com cobbled together a bunch of surreal photos from the wires that depicts the hyper-sanitized, white-washed, and quasi-futuristic city Beijing has become. Read more

Tyr are a great Viking metal band from the Faroe Islands, a tiny nation between Greenland and the British Islands. They sing in Faroese, Danish, and English, crafting amazingly catchy songs inspired by Dream Theater, mid-era Metallica, and Black Sabbath.

There’s nothing I don’t adore about this eco-friendly line of couture clothing, fashioned by Allysun Maria Dutra out of LA. Read more

Now this is fun. This 3D watch dial actually jumps to life. The dial is a modern version of the 19th century art form of lithophanes: carved porcelain sheets that, when lit, deliver astoundingly detailed images. When the pusher is activated, the dial springs to life in 3D, with an LED light and afterglow effect. Read more
