Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong era. When I read about historical icons I tend to glamorize them. Their lives seemed so vividly validated, pioneers creating new ground, having the courage to speak an alternative language full of questions and tinged adversity. Mark Twain’s quote, ‘I have never let my schooling interfere with my education’, somehow puts me back in my place, reminding me to write my own way. Artists Miso and Ghostpatrol organically sketch their way to inspiring street art that holds dear to frontierland. Together their momentum clears uncommon ground.

 

Karl Kwasny, also known as Monaux, has just embarked on a rather ambitious digital art book project - he’ll be publishing one illustration per week for two years. It’ll be one playful book when he’s done; you might recognise the Australian illustrator’s style from some recently released Insight51 and Mooks tees.

This photo by Christian Fischer captures the Wolffia Arrhiza, a member of the Araceae family of plants, and the smallest plant known to man. Cute, huh?

In my next life, I want to sing like Frightened Rabbit frontman Scott Hutchison. Oh, and grow a lush beard, so I can play in their band. Better start cracking.

I’ve just returned from a well earned holiday at Heron Island, a natural coral cay off the coast of Queensland. We arrived after a two hour boat trip from Gladstone, and departed with a 30 minute helicopter trip. We walked around the island most days, the trip taking a leisurely fifteen minutes. Read more

With Lungfish guitarist Asa Osborne’s latest project, Zomes, he continues to explore loops and cycles with endlessly repeating musical phrases, this time played on circuit-bent keyboards. The resulting tracks sound at times like medieval court music at others like the soundtrack to a Hal Hartley movie.

Chicago artist Ellen Greene makes leather gloves with ‘tattoos’ on them, that is she paints old-school sailor tattoos onto them. They’re pretty cool. Read more

Disorder Disorder in Sydney

Pitched as ‘Ulterior Motives in Contemporary Art’, Disorder Disorder is running until November 14 at Penrith Regional Gallery. It’ll be well worth the trip out west of Sydney: the Australian, Japanese, American and European cast reads like a warriors of street art roundup and includes Mike Giant, Ed Templeton, Anthony Lister [artwork above], Ozzie Wright, and Jonathan Zawada.
