Fashion design honcho Marc Jacobs’ has again dabbled along the skating path, unleashing a new Hands skateboard deck. The obverse side features a vibrant all-over cut-and-paste collage, while the upper offers a tapeless wood finish with signature Jacobs by Marc Jacobs stamp. This man seriously has the Midas touch; although I hope he doesn’t share his ending.

Marc Jacobs is giving it back by teaming it up with Creative Growth, who are the world’s oldest and largest art studio for adults with disabilities. In the Special Items section of his site, you can buy bags, wallets, trinkets, and help a fantastic cause.

Ten years of German photographer Jürgen Teller’s candid, glamorous photo campaigns for Marc Jacobs’ men’s and women’s collections have been collated into one cohesive 576-page fashion bible. This book does an excellent job of detailing just how significant this collaboration has been for fashion, featuring appearances from the likes of Sofia Coppola, Charlotte Rampling, Meg White, Thurston Moore, Rufus Wainwright, William Eggleston, and Winona Ryder. While I am as impressed as anyone with an artist’s ability to render accurate and lifelike human figures, I’m more often compelled aesthetically by looser and more stylized images such as Camilla Engman’s. The wide-set eyes, bulbous bodies, and skewed proportions of the people and animals in Engman’s paintings lend them a certain expressiveness and melancholy. Read more

Concept albums have always been a hit or miss affair, all too often to be taken with a pinch of salt. Some work brilliantly; many fall flat on their esoteric face. Dr John’s response to Hurricane Katrina is an intriguing album. Some is rousing, some depressing: it’s littered with political statements, perhaps too much at times but given it’s purpose the over-saturation isn’t surprising. Read more
