One of the first magazine editing jobs I had, way back in the day, was heading up the free Australian street magazine, STU, which was a fountain of creativity, featuring the young hotshots of fashion, art, music and everything else in between. The art director there was Luca Ionescu, a brilliantly talented guy who created a look for STU which veered between excitingly unpredictable and totally unreadable. But hey, who cares? The damn thing looked amazing. Luca went onto bigger and better things, launching his own publication, Refill, and taking on a long list of clients whose brand identities have been shaped over the years by his unique mesh of highly conceptual design. I scream, you scream, we all scream for Beer Scream? At Toronto-based Beerbistro, ice cream is being turned into something to really scream about. Specializing in what they call ‘fresh market beer cuisine’, Beerbistro is a beer lover’s dream, with twenty beers on tap, 140 plus bottles, and a menu entirely comprised of beer flavored dishes — including dessert. Films involving characters faced with an impossible choice never make easy viewing, an example being the Nick Cave Australian gem, The Proposition. A nightclub manager, played with understated power by Joaquin Phoenix, is the victim here, and you actually feel truly uncomfortable as his predicament unfolds. Set in the 1980s, We Own The Night shows a real nostalgia for that period — particularly in the costumes. Read more
For some reason it’s rare that you see London in this light. Nightscapes of big cities are usually reserved for New York and Tokyo, for example. Perhaps the comparatively scarce skyscrapers makes the city less photogenic in that respect. So photographer Jason Hawkes’ work is long overdue — he has really brought the city to life, and given it that lick of golden light that a long-exposure is good for.

Pre-eminent Norwegian Viking metal band Enslaved has evolved over the years from a straight-forward black metal band into a moody, post-rock outfit without completely abandoning their roots. Their last few albums have seen a shift towards English lyrics, sweeping and majestic instrumentals, and diverse influences — everything from Pink Floyd and ’70s prog and psych rock to ’80s goth and shoegaze pop. Inspired by the unique digital clock apps created by the designer, Sean Zoega, the i-toc watch is a colorful physical manifestation of digital ideas featuring bespoke two-disc Japan quartz movement. The outer gradient displays the minutes while the inner gradient shows the hours. The rings interact, creating an ever-changing pattern of design and colour.
