The CicLAvia VI, which was recently held in Los Angeles, also played host to a fantastic 14.5-foot-tall handmade cruiser bike by Los Angelopes co-founder Richie Trimble that literally towered over the rest of the wheels. While Trimble didn’t win any awards with his Big Boy bike, LA Streets Blog carried an interesting interview with him afterwards about his bikes: ‘They’re a day maker… that could give someone enough courage to go do something just because they want to do it.’

Situated at Venice and La Cienega, Venice 6114 is a hidden gem amongst Culver City’s more established galleries. Run by Sergio Bromberg, the gallery shuns the traditional white cube space adopted by its neighbors. Instead it uses the locale, which still retains the facade and feel of the mechanics garage it once was, as a shell to transform into whatever environment is necessary for the featured artist. Bromberg doesn’t simply put on exhibitions – he puts on events.

If you can’t bare the lines but crave a creative pint to dig your spoon into, then LA Creamery Artisan Ice Cream may be more your style. Delivered to your doorstep, this all-natural, organic ice cream collection has decidedly more adult overtones. Just check out their line of boozy ice creams in flavors like Chimay, Moonshine + Caramel Corn, Absinthe, and Tennessee Whisky.

Or, if you can never have too much bacon, dig into Porc Phat, made of Spanish Iberico lardo, Asian pears, hazelnuts, and mint gel. At LA Creamery, treating “ice cream as an art form” is their motto – literally. That’s not too surprising considering it’s the brainchild of the same guy who brought Los Angelenos’ Umami Burger.

When pork-riddled, boozy, cupcake-sandwiched ice creams are just not what you’re craving, there’s no shortage of cool (pun intended) spots in town. The shaved ice cream at Sno is causing quite the stir andBeachy Cream’s surf-inspired lot always charms us too. Whatever you go for, you’ll need little excuse to polish your cone off. [Red Velvet close-up photo by Christine Chiao for Serious Eats; Boozy Ice Cream photo by Bakers Royale]

The sun comes out, the temperature rises, and all of a sudden, everyone’s sporting an ice cream cone. But in cities where the sun shines on the daily, ice cream is more of an art to be perfected than a seasonal affair. Los Angeles is Exhibit A. Over in Beverly Hills, the fine folks that brought cupcake to its past glory, Sprinkles, have recently opened a white-tiled, neon-signed ice cream shop.

Though the vision is to put a new spin on old-fashioned favorites, Sprinkles Ice Cream has not lost its cupcake roots. On the contrary; here, ice cream in flavors like Cap’n Crunch, Salted Caramel, and Peanut Butter Cup are scooped into red velvet waffle cones or sandwiched between cupcake tops. The design is slick and playful, the ice cream slow churned and dense, and the lines long – but, at least it’s next to the original Sprinkles with only a 24-hour cupcake ATM in between.

My upcoming art show is getting some media attention, but I think the coolest is from the Cut-Foot Hotline. It’s very old school in all the best ways. Imagine a telephone with a rotary dial. When calling (310) CUT-FOOT, you will get a daily recording of what is happening on the Eastside of Los Angeles: mostly bands, concerts and some art openings. The performance is stellar. Artist Anthony Ausgang plays it up as the fast talking, smooth gliding announcer. His words make beautiful low brow poetry. With great dedication, Ausgang has been maintaining the hotline for years. I can’t wait to call on Friday the 13th.

Can crime, dressed as fashion, be an art form? It seems so. American photographer Melanie Pullen created the High Fashion Crime series which illustrates real criminals in Los Angeles between 1912 and 1950. She tells the cruel stories to society from her own point of view, working with famous models, actresses and brands such as Prada, Chanel and Gucci. She recovers documentary archives and gives the high fashion taste to crimes that most people tend to be insensitive to.

At this unique privately owned museum in Los Angeles, one has to walk through a maze of corridors within the softly lit exhibits where you are introduced to an alternative history that you would not read in history books.

Hundreds of stories are told through some equally strange artefacts, including some of my favourites such as the folk art paintings of the first canines that were rocketed into space before humans, the microscopic sculptures of Napoleon and Pope John Paul II, which would each fit in the eye of a needle, or the collection of wise tales, such as the ant eggs, thought in the Middle Ages to cure love-sickness, and the duck’s breath captured in a test tube, once believed to cure thrush.

Daniella White is the designer of Plumed Serpent, extravagant headdresses that she hand makes herself in Los Angeles. Each headdress is a magical blend of feathers, recycled furs, vintage jewels and gems, fine fabrics and chains. You truly become a goddess, a queen or whatever your heart desires when you wear her pieces. Where do you wear them? I like to walk around the house in my bathrobe with my fancy Plumed Serpent pieces. Yes, I collect them and I feel fabulous.

Rebekka Johnson, Kimmy Gatewood and Sarah Lowe (Candy, Cora and Seedy Apple) pack a comedic, slapstick punch as they sing, dance and endorse a tasty treat called Corndy (the Corn-Flavored Candy).
A year ago you could happily find me here, writing for Lost At E Minor, and cooking away in Los Angeles restaurant kitchens. A year later, I’ve launched Sqirl (for the old saying ‘Squirreling Things Away’), a preservation company dedicated to jams, jellies, and marmalades made from certified organic seasonal fruit no more than 200 miles from Sqirl’s commercial kitchen.

Curious about unusual produce like Mandarinquats (a Mandarin and Kumquat hybrid), Pakistani Mulberries, or Seascape Strawberries? Well, I am too, and it turns out that they make extraordinary jam. Finished off with minimal amounts of fair trade organic cane sugar and cooked in a copper jam pan made for me by a local, ‘knarled grizzly old coot’ (that’s what the copper artist calls himself), it’s really The Jam.

While preservation invades my consciousness, I turned to Scott Barry (Print Magazine Top 20 Designer for 2011) for the package design and branding. He’s brilliant and really considered form, function and aesthetic and how they would coexist. Artist James Gulliver Hancock lent his stop-motion moxie, and the world of Sqirl’s been born.

So now it’s a published fact – very few hands are responsible for what I believe to be beautiful work, both inside the jar and outside of it. And I can only hope that you dig it, too.

This new series of alternative sculptures by Brendan Lott uses the wall as part of the ‘canvas’, so if you were to buy one of his pieces, he would have to recreate it on the actual wall in your home.

Lott is always pushing the boundaries of medium: his previous series being photographs he found on file sharing networks of seemingly pedestrian actions that reveal the human condition, which he would mail to a small Chinese village known for mass commercial reproductions to have them make into paintings. His show runs at Walter MacIel Gallery in Los Angeles between May 21 and July 9.
