This installation, the Mending Project, consists of Chinese scissors suspended from the ceiling, pointing downwards, while artist Beili Liu sits below sewing cloth. The hovering, massive cloud of scissors alludes to distant fear, looming violence, and worrisome uncertainty, described by the artist herself. During this live installation/performance, Beili asks visitors to cut white sheets and offer the section to her to sew together. As seen in the pictures and video, Beili calmly sews while scissors hang dangerously above her during her performance. She balances fear of the hanging scissors with the soft, calming, aura of sewing.

I’ve been going through a Paul McCartney phase of late, trawling deep within his catalogue to unearth hidden gems amongst the played out classics. His recent collaborations with ex-Killing Joke member, now uber-producer, Youth, aside {the aptly titled Fireman projects), McCartney has always maintained an elegant polish about his recorded music, the melodic perfection of his poppier numbers brushing ever so gently against the soulful songs he wrote to his late wife, Linda. This is one of them, Maybe, I’m Amazed, as heartfelt and emotive as one man and a minor key progression can get. The rawness of his delivery, on this song in particular, is so intense and beautiful.

We met Lightspeed Champion (Londoner and former Test Icicles member Dev Hynes) backstage at Oxford Arts Factory at precisely 4.15pm. We had everything organised right down to the songs he’d play and with a only a small timeframe to do it in, we were a little nervous. But Dev was relaxed, lighthearted and disarming — as with many other players — spontaneity reigned on the day. The store Celebrity Wigs was a little creepy. While Dev played to an audience of blank polystyrene faces, clad in the future headdress of drag queens and lady boys, business carried on as usual around us. Initially he had wanted to play a cover by The Veronicas and together we all tried to remember the lyrics for a good five minutes, but due to poor memory and a little nervousness on his part, Dev instead indulged us in a new track called The Kids.

Micah P. Hinson is like every rustic, broken down, and pieced back together country great that’s ever been. Only hipper and slightly less sombre. This track, Diggin’ A Grave, is a button-up hoe down with a classic pop chorus and a jangly banjo accompaniment. Yup, some folk have all the fun.

The post Micah P.
