Stateless is an electronica band from Leeds. Ariel is the title of their latest single taken from the not yet released album Matilda. The song is about the eternal battle between good and bad, imagined in the video as a fight between Ariel and the Devil himself. For the visuals, they collaborated with the design studio FIELD. They recorded an improvised dance interpretation of Ariel’s battle using motion capture technology and then digitally animated it. The outcome is quite stunning!

Heavy metal and hip-hop are perhaps the most popular forms of rebellion for kids the world over. In Malaysia, metal — particularly black metal — has taken such a strong hold that the Fatwa Council there banned it, fearing that the music would compel listeners to rebel against religion. Contrary to the council’s intentions, black metal is as popular as ever in Malaysia, and is a recognizable cultural touchstone there, as indicated by the above clip from the 2005 film Filem Rock.
We ran ourselves ragged driving from Baltimore to Portland in 48 hours flat, and by the time we were almost done with our West Coast tour in LA, we were exhausted, stinky, and broke. As some wise folk have noted, it’s kinda like a cross between The Beach Boys and The Flaming Lips. Now, how could that be a bad thing?
