What can you do with military-grade flares? In his Take Refuge series, LA-based photographer Kevin Cooley used these to illuminate the nighttime and often cold landscapes of wherever he travelled to for his other projects, and shot the long-exposure images with an analog 4×5 large format camera. They emit the same inviting glow regardless of which location he’s at. Consistency can be comforting.

Anna Pogossova is a Moscow-born, Sydney-based photographer with a growing following in the art and commercial worlds. She constructs fictitious environments, mostly out of a composite of existing landscapes and miniature objects/sets which she shoots in her studio. Her practice is mainly concerned with the experience of familiarity in fictional and uncanny imagery, such as in art, film, and popular culture. Pogossova is exhibiting her new series, H, in her first ever solo show at Gaffa Gallery in Sydney between May 16-27.

These cool illustrations from Shane McAdams were created using an unexpectedly fresh media: try ball point pen, oil, and resine on panel. Step into a world of synthetic landscapes that are bursting with scenes of abstract bright colors. Some of the imagery is naturalistic and comfortable, but each piece sports neon colors, even where you’d least expect it. This is the power of pure color right here.

My digital work allows me to explore vibrant use of color in a medium that I am able to control in great detail. I enjoy examining the natural world, and manipulating landscapes in ways that bring out an ‘otherworldly’ element in the image.

I want for the observer to ponder whether or not a landscape of my creation actually exists in reality, and in what capacity it possibly exists. I often examine places that are not visibly pleasing, and create an image that I find amazing beauty in. Through my work, I am able to alter the world I see with my eyes, and make it beautiful in my mind’s eye. The result is often alien, but always subjective. That is the inherent nature of art. It is inherently subjective.

I had the pleasure of meeting painter Maria Calderon a few years back through some mutual friends. Even then her work was stunning. It seemed as though you could stand back and take in everything you thought you could, and if you moved up to a piece, you were pulled in to all the different stories, different landscapes, within a single painting. The vibrant colors and never ending spacial trickery really does it for me.

I’ve always been a huge Milton Avery fan, so the instant I stumbled across the work of Californian artist Chi Birmingham, I was head over heals. I really enjoy how every year Birmingham decides to take his distinctive style in a new direction, from various American landscapes to basements (as if, after all those wide open landscapes, he needed to feel a little more protected?), to various everyday rooms (not quite ready to venture back into the wide outdoors, but tired of the dank basement day in day out?). I’d certainly recommend popping by Birmingham’s blog as well, as the subject matter on there are a lot of fun doodles and cool figurative bits.

In the same vein as Andy Goldsworthy, the landscape for Christo and Jean Claude is a canvas. The husband and wife team, renowned for their 1969 piece — Wrapped Coast — and early 1980s Surrounded Coast series, are still going strong with their project in Akansas entitled Over the River. The sketches are ambitious, but that’s never deterred them before. What they plan is the suspension of fabric panels over the Arkansas River, following its changing course for over 5.9 miles, ‘interrupted by bridges, rocks, tress, and bushes and for aesthetic reasons, creating abundant flows of light.” The project will be unveiled (or veiled?) during a period of two consecutive weeks between mid-July and mid-August of any given year in the future, in 2012 at the earliest.

Alec Soth is a huge inspiration on me, a contemporary American photographer who dabbles in the grim realities of life, but always manages to coat them just enough not to depress the hell out of you. Some of his photographs are openly unbiased views of the human race, while others are just statements about how we live and the environment that surrounds us. Two books I received recently take my breath away: one is Soth’s Columbian photographic memoirs Dog Days, Bogota; the other is his peculiar photo diary, Niagara. Both books mix deep elements of tragic realism molded with Soth’s own thumbprint of bold lighting techniques and wide exposures.

Niagara contains anonymous love letters and suicide letters of common misfits and locals who share nothing that special except that they live near the most beautiful waterfall in the world. As one women notes, ‘I can’t go on like this. I hate you always. Take Care and Drop Dead’.

Dog Days, Bogota combines elements of clear desperation in the faces of the local Bogotans with astonishing landscape shots, like the one below.
