Belgian’s Studio Job took two of the world’s great architectural marvels, the Eiffel Tower and the Taj Mahal, and turned them into patinated bronze household objects. So that’s how the Eiffel Tower became a slouchy lamp and the Taj Mahal got inverted and turned into a table. Both are pretty cool.

Californian designer Roxy Russell hopes her Medusae collection of lamps literally illuminates the problem of plastic pollution in oceans and seas. It’s a noble desire — though it’s one she acknowledges as being ironic since the glowing lamps are also made of plastic. However, as she puts it: ‘… the PET is (not) an evil material, it is the way we use it’. Plastic or not, these wispy jellyfish lamps are beautiful.

Diana Dumitrescu — who recently got us wanting to light up fluorescent crap on our table with the Poop Lamp — has designed super-cool black bulbs that made us go from ‘huh?’ to ‘wow!’ in seconds. The black tinted incandescent bulb sits within a sharp angular molecular structure and emits natural ambient light, while the black light bulb emits UV light invisible to the human eye. These are gorgeous.

When we perceive color, it is really the refraction of light that we are observing. This idea is what designer Dennis Parren had in mind when he created his CMYK Lamp. The lamp takes advantage of LED technology and divides the space into vivid bands of cyan, magenta, and yellow.

This illuminating piece was created by an artist and former colleague of mine, Kiel Mutschelknaus. ‘It is a lamp with 28 switches. In order to turn the lamp ON, you need to switch all 28 toggle switches to the on position. And, logically, to turn the lamp off, ALL the switches need to be turned to the off position. This was no simple straight circuit. It is without a doubt the most frustrating lamp ever constructed’.

Swedish artist Annika Nordenskiöld has made beautiful art out of concrete, and it’s even functional: turn them on and get a very personal light. No molds are used, the shapes are made by hand lying down, one side at the time. Concrete burns fast, she’s got around a minute to work while the concrete is shapable.
