The Frogs were a band formed in 1980 by brothers Jimmy and Dennis Flemion who wrote catchy pop tunes about race, religion, and homoeroticism. My favorite album, It’s Only Right And Natural, was released on Homestead records in 1989 and was extremely controversial because of the subject matter. The band was championed by Kurt Cobain, Billy Corgan and Beck, who sampled the song I Don’t Care If U Disrespect Me (Just So You Love Me) on his hit Where It’s At.

Nirvana are set to reunite today, and the speculation is in that they’ll be getting by with a little help from their friends. Paul McCartney will be subbing in for Kurt Cobain when the grunge rockers take the stage at tonight’s concert for Sandy Relief in Madison Square Garden. Featuring other classic rock acts like Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, The Rolling Stones, Eddie Vedder and the Who, the show kicks off at 7:30pm American EST. [Stream the concert live here]

I was obsessed with Kurt Cobain when I was a teenager, and his death was a huge deal for me. My friends and I made a little shrine to him under our school’s flagpole and lowered the flag to half mast, much to the chagrin of the hippie-hating, young Republicans in our class. Cobain’s daughter, Frances Bean, who we remember in photographs as an infant clutched in the arms of her mother, Courtney Love, has managed to remain relatively out of the public view until this recent shoot she did for French fashion designer Hedi Slimane. The Cobain legend certainly continues to smolder in those eyes, which are very much like her father’s.

Tyler the Creator is an exciting and interesting character these days. He is a rapper and producer, but his art isn’t really the point. The point is that he feels like the most incendiary and volatile personality since Kurt Cobain. His new record, Goblin, is out on XL Recordings.

After 35 years away, Tropicalia band Os Mutantes are back with a new album, Haih, due for release on September 7. Apparently Kurt Cobain once made a public plea for the band to get back together, Devendra Banhart asked if he could be their roadie, and Beck said ‘for years it was pretty much the only thing I listened to’. This is a very creative short fantasy film about the band.
