We asked Dan Single of Sydney’s Ksubi and Bang Gang Deejays what Aussie nightlife means to him. Just like the rest of the series we asked for one thing that represents Aussie nightlife, but Dangerous Dan refused. Read more

It’s quite disturbing at the New Generation at Australian Fashion Week show as the designer comes out to take their final bow and more often than not looks younger than the fresh-faced models. The presentation of the new kids on the block is always packed to the rafters with fashionistas on the pilgrimage to find ‘the one to watch’. Pretty soon they could be mega-brands, and everyone wants the kudos of saying: ‘I remember being at their first show’. We’re still talking about Ksubi’s (then Tsubi) infamous debut onto the scene in which live rats were released onto the catwalk (yes, PETA was not impressed). Read more

We checked in with the exciting new illustrator James Blagden last week and followed up with him to find out what music he works to. Given the day-glo intensity of his creations, it would have to be electro remixes, right? Or deep and dishy acid rock? Nope. ‘There Stands the Glass, Wondering, More and More, and I’ll Get By Somehow, all by country legend Webb Pierce’. Huh. Read more

Mariana Monteagudo’s work reveals an element of irony, not only in her unprejudiced use of iconography, but also in the way the artist takes features from toys, figures designed to arise tenderness, with their big heads and moving expressions. Read more

The controversial and multifaceted International contemporary art exhibition Trailblazers hits Sydney this month. Boutwell Draper Gallery will grace multimedia works by pioneering Australian, American and European artists from November 19 onwards. I’m thrilled to see groundbreaking pieces by Ben Frost, Kill Pixie, Copyright and Cleon Patterson [above], to name a few. The vast array of paintings, photography, sculpture, installation, video and digital arts is on display until December 13. C’mon, you know you want to culture your soul.

There are few more joys an artist has in life than coming across great resources for inspiration. Lately I’ve been studying typography, the meaning of words, and then something as simple as trying to find all the ’7 letter words’ I can so that it might fit into my latest musings. Read more

Casio Keyboard Brooklyn trio Au Revoir Simone are about to release a collection of remixes and covers their musical friends have recorded of songs found on their second album, The Bird Of Music. Titled Reverse Migration, the record features re-workings by Best Fwends, Teenagers, Darkel, and more. We caught up with them recently. Why and when did you decide to release a remix album? Annie: ‘Our friends were making so many wonderful versions of our songs we wanted to share them with the world’. How did you select the artists? Annie: ‘Mostly they were friends who told us they wanted to do remixes! Very fun and easy’. Reverse Migration is out November 11 through the band’s own label, Our Secret Record Company. Listen to Ruff & Jam by Au Revoir Simone.
