The latest release from the Kronos Quartet, entitled Floodplain, contains works written for them by composers from Palestine and Serbia, traditional works from Lebanon, Turkey and Iran, Azerbaijan and India, and popular music from 1940s Egypt and 1970s Iraq. We checked in with them and asked about the music that inspired the latest recordings. They started with the Omar Souleyman song, Dabke 2020 [listen below]: ‘I’ve always been a fan of wild singers, and Omar Souleyman more than qualifies. More over The Egg, there is a new novelty chair in town. The Disco chair, constructed from 200 meters of Electroluminescent wire, transforms into a neon rainbow with a flick a switch. A change of the pulse settings also allows the chair to become an incredible strobe light substitute. The bespoke furniture concept was commissioned by Wallpaper* Magazine, with help from London design consultancy, Kiwi & Pom. Read more
I don’t get Flight of The Concords. I just don’t find it funny. I also don’t get most comedy these days. It’s so derivative and clichéd. Everyone wants the same laughs. I’m a wheat-free guy, and though I’ve never been into sweets, I love Sweet Sin, the only gluten-free bakery in Baltimore. Aside from their wheatless treats, they also serve a wide range of savory meals such as snapper, goat, and greens.
I bought BibliOdyssey [by PK, published by Fuel] yesterday at New York’s PS1 Bookstore and was surprised to find out that this old-fashioned book (archival images from old books) was actually based on the blog, BibliOdyssey. Read more
I’m kinda obsessed with this track by Kansas City hipsters, Republic Tigers. Maybe it’s the Phil Spector-ish wall of sound harmonies or perhaps it’s the thumping bass riff, which drives the ear worm melody. Whatever. In these times of throwaway pop, it’s the well crafted and subtely produced songs that are truly memorable, and these guys have it in spades, as reflected right across their brilliant debut album, Keep Color.
