Over the last two years Klaus Pichler had been looking for accumulations of dust, fluff and grime in various locations in and around Vienna. Dust as a by product of civilisation, the enemy of a sterile society, a constant presence hidden in corners, nooks and crannies. Also, a microcosm made up of multiple components, a combination of different colours, textures and structures, a construct reproducing itself. Every bit of dust is different, each space produces it’s unique type of dust, depending on its nature and its individual use.
Klaus Pichler is a Vienna-based photographer whose work first caught my eye when viewing his Skeletons in the Closet series, which explored the backstage environments and storage sites of the Museum of Natural History in Vienna.

But I was recently and pleasantly surprised by his latest photographic endeavor. Entitled One Third, Pichler is now embracing the act of food decay in effort to help spread awareness towards global food waste. The images are stunningly beautiful compositions utilizing meticulous arrangements of food products that have naturally grown fungus over time (in his own bathroom). By dramatically lighting them against a black background, Pichler ironically showcases something very beautiful while at the same time something very sadly unfortunate.
