Whilst staying at the Kimber Modern in Austin, Texas, recently, I came across these awesome hammocks made from car selt belts designed by Ting London, which they had hanging in the communual space at the hotel. I checked in with Kimber, the owner of the Kimber Modern, and asked her how important the small design touches are at the hotel and how she keeps abreast of what’s out there that might work well? ‘The small design touches are crucial. It’s what sets us apart from so many other small hotels. Every item, no matter how minor is thoroughly researched to make sure it works for the hotel. I feel that it’s the every day items, like cork screws, salt shakers, pot holders etc. should be little works of art. So much thought goes into those small details or design touches. Whilst in Austin the other weekend, I spent a couple of nights at a beautifully designed hotel called the Kimber Modern, which is located in the happening SOCO area, just a short hop, skip and sideways roll to the bustling hive of restaurants and cafes along South Congress. The Kimber Modern is a hotel with a twist. First up, the architecture is stunning, this elegant and contemporary building with subtle splashes of color to break up the overall white-walled minimalism. And then there are the clever design touches, such as communal hammocks made from car belts, and a giant tank churning liters of water in a calming, almost Zen-like manner. I really really dig the busy, fragmented paintings of Jason Jagel. It’s full of colourful stencil-like shapes and free form doodles and it’s all crammed together into the claustrophobic quarters of his paper like an oversized sketchbook come to life.
I’ve always been an avid follower of the Comfort Station brand in Cheshire St, London, so I decided to pop in on Sunday to have a look at their new collection. It’s unique and different, featuring railway tracks and my favourite barometer necklaces, where you can rate the way you, or someone you’ve just met, is feeling, with indications of stormy, fair and excellent.

Who says the Swedes have got a monopoly on seasonal ice hotels? This one in Kemi, northern Finland, is the world’s largest snow castle, standing seventeen metres high and with walls that are 1,100 metres long. It has restaurants, an art gallery, a hotel and a chapel. In fact, since opening in the early 1990s, it’s been quite a hit for tourists to get married at the snow chapel. Tallest Man on Earth, the rasping Swedish folk singer-songwriter and one of the unsung heroes of 2008, recently recorded the beautiful song A Field of Birds, a nice adjunct to his summer album release, Shallow Grave. His sound is so loose and unmanicured, and carries a poignancy reminiscent of the rusty, early Bob Dylan.
