We asked Brooklyn-based artist Kim Herbst to tell us about her distinctive illustration style: ‘It’s usually described as an organic looking graphic novel. Recently, I’ve had pieces accepted in CMYK Magazine and the Los Angeles Society of Illustrators. I hope to have a few short comics printed together in the near future as a mini-anthology involving origami. As a child, I always attempted to copy my mother, who folded cranes and other beautiful animals out of paper. But they never came out as crisp and clean as her own. I suppose drawing them crisp and clean with brush and ink was a better alternative!’ Read more

Jean-Julien Pous’ Seeking You is an animated love letter to the city of Hong Kong. It presses all the same buttons as Blade Runner and In the Mood for Love, with a touch of Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s gothic style, and though it’s really amazing eye candy, it also smacks of creepy, orientalist expat. Here, an entire Asian city is exoticized, fetishized, and finally anthropomorphized in a rather unsubtle way. Why are so many creepy old European dudes so lecherous when it comes to Asia?
This is an amazing international contemporary art website. It’s kinda like a long list of images and videos that’s updated daily.
Lyon-based Babylon Circus is music laced with ska, gypsy, rock, vaudevillian antics, dancehall and reggae. Their first Australian East Coast tour in 2008 saw the nine piece band sell every show out. They feature on the So Frenchy So Chic compilation. We asked them to tell us about their favourite music right now, and they started with Django Reinhardt’s Minor Swing [listen below]: ‘Backstage, home, in the bus, cooking or having breakfast, is there a time you wouldn’t love to hear this one? We love it anytime, any style, too, as it’s been remixed and rearranged so many different ways. Still, we love the original best’.

Accessory designer Anne Holm Alexandersen gives new meaning to the concept of Black Swan with her interpretation of a feather collar. The intricate piece is hand-stitched with leather and attached in the back to replicate wings. Pair with pale skin and a tight hair bun for instant ballerina chic.
