Like most people, I first locked eyes on Sanna Annukka’s beautiful designs when British band Keane commissioned her to create the artwork for their second album ‘Under The Iron Sea’. Her silkscreen creations are a cool blend of her Finnish heritage (most notably, the epic poem The Kalevala), as well as the art of the Far East. I can’t help but admire the subtle beauty in these Navi, Tatl, and Tael fairy tattoos, from the 64 Zelda games.
Evan Stremke, a graphic designer from Wisconsin, has given us a morbid history lesson. The continuous subject of his marvelous poster series, Invitation To An Assassination, is the forced death of outstanding public figures. The Osama Bin Laden poster is, of course, already in the making. I’m not sure what to think of the subject matter, but I love the artistic execution. Read more
Heavy metal and hip-hop are perhaps the most popular forms of rebellion for kids the world over. In Malaysia, metal — particularly black metal — has taken such a strong hold that the Fatwa Council there banned it, fearing that the music would compel listeners to rebel against religion. Contrary to the council’s intentions, black metal is as popular as ever in Malaysia, and is a recognizable cultural touchstone there, as indicated by the above clip from the 2005 film Filem Rock.

Channeling Justin Timberlake and Alan Vega, or both or neither, Spanish Dancer is on his own axis, spinning to the BPM of a lost drum. At one point, between moving back and forth between Providence, Rhode Island and Miami, Florida, he discovered punk and his uncle bought him a ratty 50 dollar Cruise VMI guitar to mess around with. Subsequently, Spanish Dancer material is a little snarky, self-aware, and fun, while still retaining all the complex spastic freakout moments of his prior band, A Trillion Barnacle Lapse. His debut album, Burned Up, Bred High, is out now and we have the lead single, The Hustler [listen below], available for free download via the Music Download section of the Lost At E Minor site.
