A great photographer can take the same picture as a mediocre one and the difference will be obvious. Just as often, however, great photographers are great precisely because they point their lenses away from where everyone else is pointing theirs. Justina Villanueva does just that in many of her photographs of metal bands, often capturing their shoes, the wear on their gear, the vastness of the stage, or the aftermath of a brutal stage show. Her straight-forward shots are also a notch above most rock photographs as well.
The Semi Circle EP is Japanese-American producer Shigeto’s (aka Zach Saginaw) first release for Ghostly International. It’s a deep, vividly beautiful suite of electronic music.

Monet and The Impressionists is on display at Sydney’s Art Gallery of New South Wales until January 26, 2009. Alive with bold brushstrokes and dappled colours, the exhibit features 58 masterpieces by Cezanne, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Pissarro and Monet himself, among many others that have never been shown in Australia. It was amazing to view some of the finest quality works that revolutionised modern painting and the way natural light is portrayed on canvas. Go Monetise yourself and see Rough Weather, and all those serial haystack paintings.
Anyone interested in the importance of limitations on creativity should check out the new publication Vormator: The Elements of Design. Begun two years ago, it challenges artists to create a visual by using a very limited palette of shapes and possibilities. Read more
