MC Ren had a good run in the ’90s, penning the N.W.A. hits Just Don’t Bite It and She Swallowed It and performing with the gangster rap legends after Ice Cube left. His debut album, Kizz My Black Azz, went platinum, and though he sustained moderate success through the remainder of the ’90s, Ren hasn’t released a record in more than a decade, likely due to his conversion to the Nation of Islam. This year, however, the once foul-mouthed rapper is due to release Renincarnation, his fifth studio album.

Heavy metal and hip-hop are perhaps the most popular forms of rebellion for kids the world over. In Malaysia, metal — particularly black metal — has taken such a strong hold that the Fatwa Council there banned it, fearing that the music would compel listeners to rebel against religion. Contrary to the council’s intentions, black metal is as popular as ever in Malaysia, and is a recognizable cultural touchstone there, as indicated by the above clip from the 2005 film Filem Rock.

Hotel Minimal, is a pop-up one-room hotel from the Linie project that explores the concept of public and private space. The uber-hip French producer M83 has compiled a Secret Playlist for us in which he props Brian Eno, Julee Cruise, and Tears For Fears’ Head Over Heels: ‘This song was the biggest influence for my new album. The Kevin Ayers record Joy of a Toy from 1969 was released by Harvest Records and sits somewhere between Nick Drake and The Byrds. A record slightly ahead of its time, it was filled with enough interesting and clever arrangements and instrumentation to never bore. Girl on a Swing is my favorite tune for the tremolo guitar.
The latest in the Stephanie Simek jewellery collection is the Powder necklace, a pearlized Turbo Cinereus shell with tiny holes drilled into the bottom and filled with a sparkling silver-colored powder. Read more
