I had to look twice, no,no, three times at this photo of another incredible Julian Beever work before I could comprehend exactly what was going on. Such is the artistry of this 3D magician: it really takes the visuals of street art to a whole new dimension. Literally.

People are always looking to push the boundaries of street art, perhaps fed up with seeing the same (wild) style of graffiti over and over again. So, like Blu and Dan Witz, Julian Beever came into our lives like a breath of fresh air. His work is stunning, mind-boggling stuff: he manages to create a world ‘inside’ a pavement with his 3D pastel illustrations, tricking the eye into believing a dimension exists right below our very feet. Le Voyeur is one of the personal projects of the Brazilian photographer, Marcela Ferri. She calls herself an ‘observer’ and she has the ability to become ‘invisible’ to her models, always taking pictures on the streets or of friends. If you’re an observer and love to watch people, you’ll love this project, too. Read more

Yup, I would strap myself into a comfy chair, put my headphones on and, armed with a chunk of chocolate coated Peanut Slab and a can of L&P, soak up album after album of wonderfully self-indulgent low-fi melancholy. Jean-Julien Pous’ Seeking You is an animated love letter to the city of Hong Kong. It presses all the same buttons as Blade Runner and In the Mood for Love, with a touch of Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s gothic style, and though it’s really amazing eye candy, it also smacks of creepy, orientalist expat. Here, an entire Asian city is exoticized, fetishized, and finally anthropomorphized in a rather unsubtle way. Why are so many creepy old European dudes so lecherous when it comes to Asia?
One of my favourite curated art blogs is Booooooom! The site is based in my backyard of Vancouver and features a wide variety of different visual artforms, whether its paintings, photography, design work, and sometimes even videos. I find that I’m always inspired when I visit this site. I think Jeff, the site’s creator and curator, and I have really similar tastes.
So 2008 brings its first great album of the year, the self-titled release from Susanne Sundfør, put out on a small label — Your Favourite Music — and a totally unsettling and challenging listen. Read more
