Brooklyn illustrators Jordan Awan and Morgan Elliott have teamed up to create Springtime Studio. Their ‘official’ site is in the works, but they have a wonderful blog, In Bloom, up and going already. It’s already teaming with fun doodles and recent work.

 

Yvette Helin created the Pedestrian Project in 1990 with several performers costumed to look like the pedestrian graphic symbols from road signage. The stark black silhouettes photographed in different environments is a clever commentary on people and their environments as public art. Read more

Barry Underwood bases his photographs on fleeting, site-specific, light-based installations he creates in the woods. The resulting images are spooky yet soothing. Read more

Having originally sprung from the Shaky Isles (otherwise known as New Zealand), I can appreciate the humour in the New Zealand cartoon series, Bro Town, the first homegrown animated series to screen during local prime time. It’s simply brilliant, a real play on the ‘thuck’ accent and small town ways of our Kiwi brethren.

I came across the Dongzhong cave school, which is situated in a Miao village within the Ziyun county, while watching a fascinating BBC documentary series about China the other night. The school, which was built in 1984 and caters for just under 200 students, is considered to be ‘a teaching branch for nearby resident units’. It looks stunning in its ornate beauty, and it must be one hell of a stimulating environment in which to learn. Read more

Finnish folk band Gjallarhorn is named for the horn that the Norse god Heimdall blows to announce Ragnarock — the end of the world. The bands music is far from dark, however: their brand of Scandinavian folk music incorporates mouth harps, fiddles, flutes, and even didgeridoo in a melange of cheerful, but ethereally beautiful tunes sung in Swedish.

Japanese designer Kazuki Kuraishi has come up with the Ian Brown ObyO KZK shoes for adidas Originals and the ex-Stone Roses frontman has his very own limited edition with a bit of his monkey magic tattooed all over it.
